Nearly three-quarters of faculty members at U.S. colleges and universities describe themselves as liberals, and at elite schools, the proportion is 87 percent, a survey has found.
What's more, half say they are Democrats and 51 percent indicate they seldom or never attend church, according to the survey, published in the March issue of the online political journal Forum.
"You would expect the majority of English literature and sociology professors to be liberals, but our survey found that 66 percent of those in physics and 64 percent of those in chemistry are liberals," said S. Robert Lichter, a communications professor at George Mason University and an author of the study.
In English literature, 88 percent are liberals and 3 percent are conservative, the survey found.
"And in sociology, 59 percent said they are Democrats and 0 percent said they are Republicans," said Mr. Lichter, who also heads the Center for Media and Public Affairs.

Why would we expect that? Shouldn't they reflect the population under the 'diversity' principle? Perhaps the colleges and universities are failing to meet 'diversity' standards. Or they are just hypocrites.
No worries. The more they dominate academia, the better the graduating conservative.
Liberals, at Colleges and Universities? I'm shocked, shocked, I say.
I met so many of them that I lost count. People who force their students to sit through Chomsky's dribble, because they made it part of their assignment.
I can recollect numerous clash with them, including memorable ones with feminists, who are true fruitcakes.
We need to start at "13 percenter" ping list for us Freepers in academia.
In other news, it is revealed that the National Socialists ran Germany from 1933-1945. Although with more freedom than allowed by the iron fist of liberalism.
Ba-da-POW! Nice one...
it wouldn't bother me that an English or Physics professor were a liberal, if he restricted himself to teaching English or Physics. But they don't, do they.
I think these figures are probably low.
Faculty classified as conservative by their colleagues would be flaming liberals under ordinary circumstances. The second most conservative member of my department, after myself, thought to be a reactionary by everyone else, told me that he voted for bill clinton twice and that he longs for the days when Jimmy Carter or Madeline Albright conducted our foreign policy.
If that's a conservative faculty member, what are the liberals like? Don't ask.
Bad a boom. lol
that's the other deficiency in this survey - the "liberal" category is conveys the thought that these prof's are just to the left of center. They need one more category called "Marxist".
That's the cruxt of the problem. No one would care about their politics if they would simply keep their private lives to themselves. Yet, like liberal journalists, most are incapable of behaving in a professional manner.
Boy isn't that the truth. When I was coming up through the system, I appreciated any professor who was even slightly to the right of Che Guevara.
I've worked as a student teacher. In my experience, liberal or conservative, they're still employees of a socialist public education system. Even the the Republican/Conservatives are anti-Prop 13 and pro-Union to press for inflated wages. Ask them if they'd support another bond or tax to give the school more money.
The problem is the public education system itself, which attracts and breeds socialism. The solution is to take your children out of the system and into homeschool or private education of choice. Empty public school = no more public school.
Must be nice to get paid to be a DF'r and do JSA and then go on to state the obvious...nothing to see here folks...move along.
sounds like a good idea to me. I'm working on a PhD in philosophy right now. The fact that academia is dominated by liberals is no surprise to me, but I was concerned to read that conservative, religious, female profs get the worst jobs, since I fit all three categories. Although all my profs are liberal, very few of them push their politics in the classroom. I hope they will be as fair-minded towards me when I'm on the job market.
Freepmail me to join the "13 percenter" ping list if you are a professor or aspire to become a professor. Given the statistics cited in this article, it may be a very short and exclusive list. lol
Psssst...... Joyce Howard Price, you might want to also report that the sky is blue and the grass is green. It should win you a Pulitzer.
