Feral cat nuisance plan under attack By Robert Imrie, Associated Press Writer
WAUSAU, Wis. — A La Crosse firefighter who as a youngster cared for a cat named Fluffy ignited a firestorm by proposing that free-roaming wild cats be declared an unprotected species in Wisconsin — just like skunks. People could shoot them, drown them or kill them by any means without being charged with a crime.

We had a feral cat in San Antonio. After several months,I was able to pet her, but she never left our barn. She had the sweetest disposition. We never had a mouse problem with her living in the barn.
Actually, their meat is pretty tough and stringy, and has a very distinctive 'gamy' taste. The only way I know of tho make it edible is to slowly stew the meat for several hours with a lot of seasoning, shred it, and make it into tamales.
Around here a sure sign of a feral cat is a pheasant with just the breast eaten out of it. They catch them on their nests. A cat found away from a farm house in pheasant country is a dead cat.
There is a book out there somewhere titled "101 (or is it 1001) things to do with a dead cat" Quite humorous.
Whether or not feral cats are a problem, Mark Smith is an idiot. I'd be willing to bet he would be even more demonized if he had called for open season on feral dogs.

On to saving the feral cats. Or are you advocating for hunting licenses?
I like cats. In fact, I like cats more than some people I've met in life - and I havn't advocated killing them, yet, so.

The only "idiots" here are the ones who do not know what a feral cat is and how much serious damage it causes.

Okay...People actually threatened this guy. And someone had the idea of offering a $15 reward for capturing each of the cats. Now I've lived in areas with feral cat colonies and I wouldn't get within ten feet of them. They are wild, in-bred, and carry diseases that can spread to your pets. And they wouldn't exist if pet owners had been responsible in the first place.{Sheese, I sound like Bob Barker.}
I wouldn't shoot a feral cat since they have been part of the North American ecology for four hundred years or so, apparently without causing any extinctions.
If we are concerned about "invasive" critters, let's look at domestic cattle---
Cats as companions is NOT the issue here.
Discarded cats who are NOT companions is the issue.
Feral cats are an environmental catastrophe. Period.
Feral cats ARE a nuisance. A female can have three litters of four kittens PER YEAR all of which hunt and kill song birds and other small critters. Kill them like you would any other pest.
You never know where those rat catching paws have been. Cats are vile but there food is worse...
