Rev. Jesse Jackson said Tuesday afternoon that he has persuaded two Florida state senators to change their votes on a bill to save Terri Schiavo, leaving the measure just one vote shy of the majority necessary for passage.
"Two of them have committed to meeting with Gov. Jeb Bush. They say that they're flexible if they can find acceptable emergency language," Jackson told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity.
Targeting members of the state senate's black caucus in a bid to save Schiavo, Jackson explained: "While we didn't have the specific language today, if I could just get them to shift their will to do whatever [we can] within the law to help her live, that would be a victory."
"They've made that commitment," the civil rights leader added. "I hope it turns into something concrete, signed by morningtime."
Asked if he thought he'd convert the additional vote that would guarantee passage, Jackson said: "If we get two - with the help of Gov. Jeb Bush, we can get three. . . If I was able to persuade two - if he could persuade one, we can change that vote."
The top Democrat said he had contacted the governor's office and was awaiting a return call, saying, "I hope that he will call me and I hope to share with him my position."
Jackson said he would return to Florida tomorrow if he determines it is "the best, most effective way" to save Schiavo.
"I will fly to Tallahassee or Washington or anyplace," he said.
Lose the pessimism. Good grief. She's still alive and fighting. Which is more than I can say for you.
"no excuse...a leader...should be better informed".
In a perfect world, which this sure ain't.
Oh puh-leeze, this is nonsense. If he or anybody for that matter, honestly didn't realize what was at stake until after observing a week and a half of a woman starving, they're truly dumb as a box of rocks.
And we don't know it is too late to save Terri. God, along with her will to live, have already sustained her against the odds. Her family says she is still responsive, but weak. I say, where there is life, there is hope.
Jesse Jackson had another good point on CNN. He asked, if she really was as sick as they claimed, how could she survive for 12 days without food and water?
My personal opinion is WHO CARES?? If it does something good right now, fantastic!!! He sees what's coming down the road. If we sit by and starve a white woman and there's hardly a blink and even the conservatives think it's a circus, how much of a fuss will there be when it's minorities?
Then for Terri's sake set aside your [our!] mistrust of Jackson and pray that he's intervening for the right reasons - and that he's successful in this intervention.
were there any abstentions?
Exactly how many senators does Florida have?
This doesn't make sense.......or does it?
Evangelicals may not like healthy people feeding off the country but they sure get peeved when someone tries to kill an innocent woman.
On top of that, even after his poor math skills are exhibited (see above post), he sorta lays the onus on Jeb to convince one more senator if I read it right! Strange.
Even scarier is how some so-called conservatives (WPPFF) are on the 'wrong' side of the issues involving this case. Kind of makes you wonder when they side with godless demonrats, the American Hemlock Society, the America hating, God hating ACLU, a scummy death loving promoting lawyer (Felos), a wife beating, adulterous husband, the MSM, Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, Scientologists, death ghouls of every persuasion, etc., etc.
"EAGLES UP!"
(Sheesh, never thought I'd be saying anything like that in connection with something that Rev. JJ would do, whether he was grandstanding or not! Strange world.)
Are the Shindlers Democrats?
This would makes sense with their ungratefulness towards Republicans trying to help them.
PHIL, when will they get this done, does anyone have an inkling????
If Jesse pulls this off, it will be a true Coup. He will have managed to make Republicans look stupid; and rightfully so.
However, I don't think it will get done. Also, I am afraid poor Terri has probably been brutalized by starvation now to the point of no return. Too little, too late.
But God can use Jesse Jackson if He chooses. Meaning, Jesse Jackson could accomplish good for the lord, even if his motives are mixed or totally selfish.
