Two Men Arrested In Alleged Gang Rape Three Other Men Sought

POSTED: 11:54 pm EST March 24, 2005 UPDATED: 11:21 am EST March 25, 2005

HEATH, Ohio -- Two men have been arrested in the case of a young woman who said she was raped, NBC4's Karin Hirschey reported.

Authorities said the two men are illegal immigrants from Mexico, which has led to the involvement of federal immigration and customs officials.

Daniel Rodrigues Arriaga, 25, and Carlos Suarez, 18, are in jail for allegedly raping the young woman Wednesday night. Three additional suspects, however, are still on the loose.

"We think they are still in the area," said Heath Police Chief Tony Shepherd. "We are working as we speak to locate the other individuals."

Police said the alleged rape happened in an apartment located on 30th Street. Arriaga lived in the apartment and had invited the alleged victim over for a party.

"Apparently they were partying and drinking and she decided or needed to spend the night," Shepherd said. "She reported to us that the five occupants in the apartment raped her."

Shepherd said the victim was later treated and released from a local hospital, but he said the investigation into what happened is far from over -- until the last three suspects are in custody, NBC4 reported.

"I think it's only a matter of time before we know their identity at the very least," Shepherd said.

Advocates of the guest worker program assume that illegal immigrants are going to work in the U.S. for a while then go back to Mexico. What this incident points out is that not all illegal immigrants from Mexico are coming into the U.S. to work. Some illegals are criminals who are coming into the country to commit crimes.

People who live in areas with a big population of illegals already know this fact. The simple and obvious solution is to secure our borders. I feel almost stupid posting this message because I'm only stating the obvious. Too bad our political leaders can't see this obvious fact.

I read your comment about the victim of this rape and recall a comment I read attributed to a former prosecutor: "A woman has a complete right to walk down the street completely naked anywhere in town at midnight without getting raped."

Now, obviously, that's not a smart policy, just as drinking too much and passing out in an apartment with a bunch of untrustworthy men isn't a smart policy, but it doesn't take away the girl's rights not to be raped. This type of attitude is the type that leads so many women not to report what is a horrific crime and to feel that it is their fault.
