Group claiming Qatar bombing says it carried out Texas BP blast

DUBAI - A shadowy Islamist group which claimed it carried out last week’s suicide bombing in Qatar said in an internet statement it was responsible for an oil refinery explosion in Texas that left 15 people dead.

“It was a new kind of operation as we promised before,” said the ”Jund al-Sham Organisation” (Organisation of Soldiers of the Levant) in the statement posted on an Islamist website and dated March 24.

“Jund Al-Sham is able to attack with an iron fist all the enemies of Allah wherever they are,” added the statement, whose authenticity could not be verified.

“This operation was a big surprise, which we spoke of in other statements, and we will continue our suicide operations inside and outside America, and we will attack the economy of America as America did the economies of the Muslims,” it added.

The group also threatened to carry out attacks in Britain and Italy, and said these would continue “until the last soldier of the Crusaders or Jews is no longer in an Islamic country.”

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has rejected claims purportedly from two Islamist groups of responsibility for Wednesday’s blast, which rocked the third-biggest petrochemical complex in the United States, run by British multinational BP at Texas City.

“We’ve found no evidence to support criminal or terrorist activity,” Al Tribble, spokesman for the FBI office in Houston told AFP on Thursday.

He said he did not know the names of the groups, which made the claims through e-mails.

BP said the cause of the blast was still being investigated, but has ruled out terrorism.

Jund Al-Sham said it carried out the suicide car bombing near a British school in the Qatari capital on March 19 which killed Briton and wounded 12 people.

The group has also vowed to carry out attacks on oil installations, churches and Western military bases in the Middle East.

The group has also claimed responsibility for an attack targeting Israeli tourists in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Taba last October, which killed 34 people and wounded more than 100.

That attack has been claimed by at least three other Islamist groups.

Workers sift through debris at the BP facility in Texas City 55 kilometers (35 miles) south of Houston, 24 March 2005, after an explosion. Like the smog that sneaks through the windows and dirties the curtains, danger is a constant but often silent neighbor to residents of this south Texas town.(AFP/File/William Philpott)

Unlikely. It's easy to claim every accident as their responsibility.

IIRC, some "group" also claimed to be responsible for the Northeast blackout a couple of years ago.

We will never know the truth about this...never. Keep in mind Flight 587 as well...and the b.s. we were handed with that.

. . . in other news, this same group claimed responsibility for sinking the Titanic, both space shuttle disasters, and the television/recording career of David Hasselhoff.

Let's take credit for an accidental explosion and call it ours - yeh, that's the ticket.

Dopes.

These boys should go back to poking on the houka.

Considering the fact that other Airbus aircraft has lost parts or all of their vertical tail since 2001, it is very likely it was not terrorism. Had it been a bomb, the entire tail section would have been blown off, not just the vertical fin.

I am not gonna say they did or didn't do this because both you and I and every other Freeper knows 2 things. This would show the immigration issue right on Bush's front door step in Texas and number 2 this would mean that terrorists are still amongst us and the Democrats and Michael Moore think that is all hype and lies.

I think the Green Party and the DNC were actually cheering at this explosion to be honest with you.

Could it be just as easy for the FBI to always say these events are not due to terrorist activity?

Just a thought to ponder.

I don't know if this claim is true, but an attack of this nature on the very few and over-worked refineries in the U.S. would be crippling to the economy - the primary item that seems to get most Americans attention (as opposed to skyscrapers and 3000 dead civilians).

Even if this were just an accident, it should be a wake up call to our vulnerability in the energy sector, not having built a new refinery in about 2 decades despite massive increase in the consumption of refined oil products.

In order to prove that blast at the refinery is intentional, the forensic experts would look for telltale signs of deliberate sabotage. Given the oil refineries in the USA are very closely monitored down to the last pipe in many cases, any signs of deliberate sabotage would have shown up on the monitoring systems at the refinery pretty quickly.

Yes, good point. Let's hope we wake all the way up on this one.

How do we know it was not a shoe bomb? Like the shoe bomber who was busted in the act, how do we not know 100% that 587 was not a shoe bomber? If Reid had blown his plane up over the ocean as planned you bet your ass the FAA would have said it was mechanical failure. TWA 800 comes to mind right away.

Again, not saying these morons did this in Texas, but my days of blindly accepting government excuses ended sometime around 6th grade.

hhehe, think this sounds like a terrorist group that is just trying to take credit for an accident. "We did it we did it...see we're legitimate! Now maybe al-Queda will take our membership application seriously."

Morons.

You're right about that. I had it out with some libs on another forum and they're happy as can be because it will "hurt Bush, Cheney, and Halliburton". Of course how they arrive at that conclusion is beyond me.
