The Schiavo Stakes: What the Fight's Really About

THE SCHIAVO STAKES: WHAT THE FIGHT'S REALLY ABOUT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- March 25, 2005 -- THE looming death by starva tion of Terri Schiavo has ex posed yet again the key fault line in American culture. Those who have sided with her parents in seeking the reinsertion of her feeding tube have a view of life that is profoundly different from those who have sided with her husband's quest to have her die. Those who want her to live tend to view life as a gift — a treasure beyond value that has been bestowed upon us and that we therefore have no right to squander. The giver of the gift cannot be seen by the human eye, and the essence of the gift cannot be seen either. We usually call that essence the "soul." Our souls define us: They make us who we are in the deepest sense. And they transcend us as well: They are our connection to the divine, to all in the universe that is unseen and unknowable but is still there. Most religious people share this set of beliefs, which is why those who have pushed hardest to save Schiavo are devout Christians. Many of those who want her to die, by contrast, view life as a natural phenomenon — a collision of egg and sperm that gives rise 280 days later to a baby. That baby is the product of human interaction, deriving genetic information equally from mother and father and recombining it into a new human form. It's a wonder, but it's not a miracle. It's explicable within the laws of nature, and so there isn't anything necessarily transcendent about it. In some sense, then, the human body has a mechanical quality to it.

I hope Michael Shrivo is not forgotten and a continued effort to show neglect, abuse and perhaps other crimes are levied against him. I do not want him, if he is guilty of described crimes, to sleep peacefully in his bed.

As a reporter let me ask you this..I have not heard much about this on the media in reference to his lawyer, G. Felos, who has allegedly written a book on Terri Schrivo's life. Written and ready to be released? Is this fact or fiction? And if so ..would M.Schrivo be a recipient of any $$$ from this book on his wife, Terri?

You probably are aware of this info, others here may not be: "The following documents have been collected from case evidence, testimony and other sources in the public record.

These items give significant illustration that the circumstances surrounding Terri's collapse may be suspect and that the following actions by the guardian should be investigated.

Michael Schiavo Appointed Terri’s Guardian

On June 18, 1990, after a conducted investigation declaring Terri incapacitated, a hearing was held in a St. Petersburg courtroom appointing Michael Schiavo as Terri’s legal guardian.

The St. Petersburg court files state that Terri’s parents were notified by mail of these events, including the hearing, and had no objections to Michael Schiavo being appointed Terri’s guardian.

Terri’s parents emphatically state that they did not know of the investigation concluding that Terri was incapacitated, or the subsequent court hearing and were never notified.

Additionally, there is no evidence of any documentation in Terri's legal case files verifying that Terri’s parents supported Michael Schiavo's guardianship appointment, other than a reference that Terri's parents were in agreement.

In is important to note, during this 1990 time frame, Terri’s parents were in daily contact with Michael Schiavo, and nothing was ever mentioned regarding these court proceedings by Michael Schiavo or his attorney.

The entire legal Guardianship transaction was handled by attorney Daniel Grieco.

This.. http://www.zimp.org/stuff/..information has been archived in the court’s microfiche files, but was only recently discovered, in June 2004, by Terri’s family.

Don't forget the elderly.

With l0 million illegal aliens here and 10 million more to come before Bush is through his presidency, they (the State) will be very active to have the elderly killed. We're going to need that money for George's Mexicans.

We elect - and re-elect - scoundrels in wearying numbers here in Tennessee, and Memphis in particular. We have a city councilman - a former co-worker - who is a convicted felon (bribery) who was reelected after he completed his sentence. And at the very top, we had a governor go directly to jail several years ago. Fred Thompson (the lawyer and former senator who plays a lawyer on TV) made his name on that case.

But somehow we must learn to keep the failures of these leeches in the public eye, and defeat them when they try to sneak back into office. Ideally, they would withdraw from the race because the public outcry for their defeat would be so plain. What is the message to our children if George Greer is reelected in 2010?

I know that I will never again feel respect for a black robe, and I intend to convey that message to any judge that I ever encounter outside of court. I teach managerial economics, and one of the lessons addresses the need for the government, through the courts, to enforce contracts and property rights. We need courts and judges in order to function as a society, but they are in and of society, not above it.

I sincerely hope Gree is not reelected. If he is, I'll probably feel like joining those who are knocking Florida because of his decision making. People have a tendency to not really know who the judges are that appear on the ballot, but I have a feeling they'll know Greer from now on, so the next election will be telling.

Yes, I agree with you that the black robes do not necessarily guarantee wisdom on the part of the wearer, there are bad judges, a couple even having made it to the Supreme Court.

Also agree with you on contract law and property rights, two things at the very basis of freedom.
