The Schiavo Stakes: What the Fight's Really About

THE SCHIAVO STAKES: WHAT THE FIGHT'S REALLY ABOUT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- March 25, 2005 -- THE looming death by starva tion of Terri Schiavo has ex posed yet again the key fault line in American culture. Those who have sided with her parents in seeking the reinsertion of her feeding tube have a view of life that is profoundly different from those who have sided with her husband's quest to have her die. Those who want her to live tend to view life as a gift — a treasure beyond value that has been bestowed upon us and that we therefore have no right to squander. The giver of the gift cannot be seen by the human eye, and the essence of the gift cannot be seen either. We usually call that essence the "soul." Our souls define us: They make us who we are in the deepest sense. And they transcend us as well: They are our connection to the divine, to all in the universe that is unseen and unknowable but is still there. Most religious people share this set of beliefs, which is why those who have pushed hardest to save Schiavo are devout Christians. Many of those who want her to die, by contrast, view life as a natural phenomenon — a collision of egg and sperm that gives rise 280 days later to a baby. That baby is the product of human interaction, deriving genetic information equally from mother and father and recombining it into a new human form. It's a wonder, but it's not a miracle. It's explicable within the laws of nature, and so there isn't anything necessarily transcendent about it. In some sense, then, the human body has a mechanical quality to it.

Podhoretz fairly describes the polarized views on the Schiavo case. His most salent point is that Scientific rationalism has no room for the concept of the human soul given to us by G-d, which is our most precious and human possession.

Judgenfuhrer Greer, husband of the Board of Directors of the Hospice
where people are warehoused, and only when necessary, executed:
"This is about a Judges' right to exterminate inconvenient people.
Henceforth, Senators shall not be the only ones to have that right.
We, Judges, shall foreverafter 'Kopechne' anyone we want, too."

For some reason, the conviction of those who believe in the divine fills the scientific rationalists with unreasoning rage.

****************

And fear. Fear that they are wrong on the most basic level.

Although the scientific rationalists would like to bury this issue, it's life is just beginning.

Isn't this judge blind? He must have a terrible quality of life. He probably wouldn't even feel it if he were starved to death.

Has anyone coined the term "Florida-side" yet?
As in Arkinside.

There is an invisible world, and we live in it.

Podhoretz hits all the salient points.

This is the scary part:

The scientific rationalists see a vegetable in human form, a life only in the strictest sense of the word. They see a human machine that is broken and cannot be repaired.

Taken to the extreme, the results of this viewpoint would mean death to the mentally and physically handicapped, the aged, the infirm and pretty much anybody else who cannot and has no potential to take care of themselves and does not produce anything useful to society. Very sobering.

...do any of you Freepers know whether or not it is true that Terri's family will not be able to claim their daughter's body when she passes??? If so, that is the ultimate cruelty and really reveals Michael Schavio's intent all along.

The Schiavo Stakes: What the Fight's Really About

I don't agree with this article at all. The Schiavo case is not about Terri's physical condition but it is similar to Roe vs Wade. From a murdering bunch of judges ruling for Roe, millions of innocent American children have been legally murdered by their mothers and the State.

The Culture of Death Religion has now done its Roe vs Wade, and won. From now on, no sick, mentally retarded or troublesome person's life is safe. It will take a while to get around to all of us to kill us, but brother make no doubt about it, they are coming.

The judges have won. They now run the country. Everyone is afraid of them. Blocking Bush nominees will now be easier. And it all could have been stopped so easily.

Smiley, Michael requested and Judge Greer approved for him to have her cremated immediately upon her death (and have it paid for from her rehabilitation funds.)

In fact, those of us who do not believe in the existence of a soul are far more protective of actual living humans.

Are you pro-Abortion?

He has repeatedly expressed his desire to have her cremated.
