was absolutely astounded yesterday when Florida Governor Jeb Bush held that press conference and talked about the State of Florida taking custody of Terri Schiavo. He presented to the media the opinion of a doctor that Terri Schiavo was not in a persistent vegetative state .. but rather just in some sort of a period of reduced consciousness. This doctor has never seen Terri Schiavo, except on videotape, and he's issuing findings that are completely at odds with doctors who have been personally examining Terri for many months.
Think about this for a moment. Attending physicians conduct their examinations and make their reports. The matter moves into the courts and is adjudicated ... adjudicated extensively. Nineteen state judges, one Federal District Court judge, one Court of Appeals, and three now four trips to the U.S. Supreme Court. Still, politicians aren't happy with the results ... so now the State contemplates using its police power to seize the body of Terri Schiavo so that she can be forced to endure this horrible existence for years to come.
Across America there are thousands of families who have faced similar situations and made their difficult decisions without political interference. There are tens of millions more who have expressed their wishes, both in writing and in words, that they never be kept alive in this manner. Now these people are watching this hideous spectacle of politicians plotting the literal kidnapping of Terri Schiavo. And why? To please a powerful political constituency .. the ant-abortion lobby.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that there are many people out there who, when faced with medical disaster, want to be turned over to politicians to be used as political pawns. I'm wondering if these people will be anxious to keep Republicans in power.
the only way to turn this tragedy into a positive - is to stick together with the people who at least tried to do the right thing, and educate more people about what is going on here. I really believe that if the polls were flipped the other way, our side would be willing to go further out on a limb.
to trash Jeb, GWB, et al - its like a family looking at a firefighter who just had half his faced burned off in a failed attempt to save their child, and saying "why didn't you try harder, the other half of your face is fine".
What happened, Boortz the tubster, miss the donut cart this morning?
Kill them all, and save me the cream filled donuts!
"doctor has never seen Terri Schiavo, except on videotape"
That's not true - the brother was just on Hannity and he said the doctor spent quite some time with her before giving his opinion.
Yep, I enjoyed his show while we had it here(it's still on, on a smaller AM station). He's a friend of Dennis Hastert and supports the Fair Tax, but definitely lacking on morals issues.
Yes well if people would vote based on the constitution rather than their stupid wallets, maybe this can be reversed.
What Republicans were trying to do is uphold the constitution, which is their sworn duty to do. If the Judiciary wouldn't have exceeded their constitutional authority Congress would not have had to intervene. They are getting hammered for doing exactly what they had to do. Well, so be it!
You're right.
And the Dems are also forgetting one salient fact: the very SHORT attention-span of the American voter.
Three years from now, most people will have forgotten about Terri Schiavo.
Not saying that that is right, or just, but it IS true.
I agree. Why are pubs blaming pubs? This is silly and Neal should be more thoughtful.
Theresa will be our saint in leading us to do something about activist judges who think they are God in this country. It's time now to revolt.
It's the demonDeathPushingRats who are going to end up having to do damage control!
I've learned to tune Neal out when he is bashing conservative Christians or advocating death. Other times he is a great persuader on economic and defense issues. and he is pretty funny.
As far as I'm concerned, the Constitution is a dead letter and has been so for a while. Both parties only selectively adhere to it when it's convenient to do so, otherwise they find ways to get around it. But when following the letter of the law like this can allow someone to legally commit murder and destroy a family, then something is wrong with the law. Laws can always be changed. But people can't be brought back from the dead and suffering cannot be put away in a box and forgotten.
I received an email from a relative in Italy today. She said everyone is talking about this over there. They think we're crazy. This is sickening.
you should read into terry's case...she mysteriously collapsed the very day she was going to confront her husband about a divorce. his testimony has changed about that day several times. the medics on the scene called in the cops for a murder investigation. she ended up not dying so the case fell apart. He ordered no rehab from day one. Also, she never expressed do not resuscitate to any one but her husband and supposedly his brother. Why not her family too? He doesn't want her to regain communication because she would testify against him for attempted murder.
I suppose this means they lose the votes of all the "Crucify Her" crowd.
Yeah. Just look at the 2004 election. Was ANYONE thinking about Bush's handling of our plane going down in China? Or even were anti-Department of Education folks recalling the millions Bush put into No Child Left Behind? Nope--they thought Big Issue. It just happens. In our case that will be helpful.
I know this is wrong, but I think the opposite is quite true. Neal and many others are just being plain lazy. This case really did not gain attention until Congress acted. The facts simply were not known. What has been presented by the MSM is that 1)Terri is in a coma; and 2)Terri expressly stated, in writing, that she wanted to die if in this situation; and 3)the Republican congress is intervening in a private matter.
Given those two facts, who wouldn't say Congress was wrong. But we all know those three facts are absolutely crap. Terri is not in a coma, there was no writing, Congress only required the Federal Courts to give de novo review to State Court decisions. Neal's analysis just doesn't seem to jive with the facts. What a shame he takes the convenient, quick analysis proferred by the MSM.
You're right.
They may think Congress shouldn't have become involved, because of the he said, she said nature of the family dispute, but the majority who oppose this do not do so because of the fed/states' rights angle.
And when all is said and done, ain't nobody wants to be seen as aiding and abetting schiavo and his boys. They are all pariah, deserved or not.
The judiciary is what will take the hit, because the impression they left was that there was absolutely no quarter in which Terri could find aid and comfort. No quarter!
And finally, all the energy that can be morphed politically is on the side of life. The purveyors of death, how are they going to be able to inspire people and subsequent success by that?
Greer was elected by the people in Florida in 1992, 1998, and 2004.
Hey, some days we win, because sheeple will be sheeple.
Not nice, but it IS true.
