Presidential Pardon Could Neutralize Judge Greer

Legal experts say that if Florida Gov. Jeb Bush defies state judge George Greer and orders state troopers to rescue Terri Schiavo, he and any other officials who participate in such a move risk a contempt citation from Greer that could put them in jail.

But with a powerful ally in the White House, Terri Schiavo's would-be rescuers have nothing to fear from the runaway judge.

In 2001, President Clinton pardoned drug dealers, international money launderers - even FALN terrorists, who were spared in a blatant bid to win votes for his wife's Senate campaign.

The episode taught a bewildered nation that the powers of the president to pardon anyone he wishes are absolute and irrefutable.

Today, Clinton is the most popular American politician in the world and his wife is the frontrunning candidate for her party's presidential nomination. In other words, the Pardongate scandal's lasting political fallout was nil.

He even pardoned his own brother, who had been convicted of selling cocaine.

Should Gov. Bush decide to rescue Terri Schiavo by force in violation of Judge Greer's order, President Bush could do the same for his brother - along with any other officials the right-to-die judge tries to punish.

Would there be controversy? You bet. Would the Bush family's political enemies try to capitalize? Absolutely.

But a nation that forgives one president for pardoning terrorists will certainly forgive another who uses his pardon power to save a life.

Once Terri Schiavo begins to receive the treatment she's been denied for more than a decade, her condition will almost certainly improve. Nurses who have cared for her have already testified she can speak and eat without a feeding tube, in stark contradiction of Judge Greer's findings.

Terri's recovery, however minimal, would serve as powerful evidence that the Bush brothers did the right thing in coming to her rescue.

In the meantime, the nation would be spared the haunting specter of its government starving an innocent citizen to death.

That is ridiculous! Jeb Bush isn't going to risk his political future.

This guy has no political future. There's still time for him to avoid this fate, but it's waning.

You've just proven your TOTAL lack of understanding. And you guess wrong.

You have a strange understanding of God if you think it's an either / or kind of thing. As if God is no longer in control of men because he gives them free agency.

See Proverbs 21:1

The President has the authority he just won't use it.

Article. II.

Section. 1.

Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:--"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Section. 3.

He (the President) shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

But.........Bill Klintoon is a Dimocrat and that's why he can and did get away with it. GW would get crucified for anything similar.

Well I'll still support Jeb for President or any other office. I'm just giving you a political analysis that even losing 10% of the evangelical vote could make it very tough for him to win a presidential election.

After his efforts to date, he'd better get 200% of the previous high-water evangelical mark, and his coattails had better generate an 80-20 majority in the Senate and a 348-87 majority in the House, or the evangelicals will rightly earn the title of "worthless backstabbing, treasonous, disloyal bastards."

In short, the GOP has given you all you could legitimately demand. You'd better cough up the votes in 2006 and 2008, or you're going to be in the same position as a guy who stiffs a loanshark.

You guys may think before posting, but at least dirtboy makes sure he is absolutely wrong before posting anything. DSH is sure foolish for joining this enterprise. Dirtboy is too consistently and arrogantly wrong to be doing this out of ignorance. Otherwise, it is just a DSM-IV situation .

"Yes, according to DOJ, and according to Article II of the U.S. Constitution, which is blindingly clear on the matter."

The citation of the Constitution (it's antiquated don't ya know!) didn't seem to be enough for some people so I though maybe a link from the DOJ website would do the trick!

"...tell Greer to pound sand in his playpen."

Throw the sand in his blind eyes, then hid his food and water.

I'm beginning to wonder what advantage we have by being in control. The GOP has no strategy to satisfy what the people voted them in for. At best, with the number of RINO's involved, we have a shaky majority.

Our majority is fine in the House. It's pretty good in the Senate, except for the filibuster rule and the fact that we have some real questionable moderates wearing the GOP label.

The Democrats can't pass one piece of legislation even if we can't pass all we want. Of all the battles won, we won 100% of them.

That's the advantage of being in control.

I agree. The reference to the Justice Department's site was a good one. It says in straightforward terms what some here didn't understand Article II to be saying.

I understand what you are saying, but I am just so upset with the seemingly lackluster approach they take to politics. I long for the days of Howard Baker and even Bob Dole, who, once in a while had something up their sleeve. The leaders of today wear short sleeves if you ask me.

I apologize.

Apology accepted, from this end. To be honest, I'm not even sure I knew what you meant. ;-)

To be sure, the last few days in particular have caused plenty of distress for many people, no matter how they might come down on the Schiavo issue.

Patronage must be paid for.

The religious right just got a hugh and series amount of patronage.

They must generate a similarly hugh and series amount of votes to pay for it.
