This accident occurred during startup of a unit that had been down for maintenance. Startup is the most dangerous time. There are survivors who have already provided information.

There will be a thorough investigation by BP, OSHA, the EPA and other agencies. It will take some time, but the bottom line is that somebody didn't tighten up something the way they should have.

Saying it was would cause serious economic ramifications ranging from the dollar dipping even further to oil prices taking a significant uptick.<<<

Saying it would also irk the People enough that those darn vigilantes might want to defend this country or something..we sure cant have THAT! /sarcasm

A spark or static electricity will do it if the air saturation is right. In work like this they use lead or brass tools to prevent sparking and every thing is grounded. Usually when they determine the cause someone did something stupid or if under construction it was something no one thought about. I remember one where they had contracted painters and no one thought about the buckets. several were killed when a bucket was dropped from a ladder and the spark created a explosion killing if I remember correctly 3 men.

Sooooo .. since they can't get their M-13 gangs organized - they're now going to claim accidents. Good grief.

While it could have been a terrorist attack - I think we would have seen a different mobilization of police. Just a guess.

"9/11 could easily have been limited to one plane because of coordination failure in the hijack teams. "

Or a better coordinated response by NORAD and the FAA.

I don't care what the FEDS say, this is very suspicious to me. But I have been wrong before.

I don't think that there is any reason to be suspicious in this case. Of all of the units in the refinery, damage to this one will have one of the least impacts on the refinery's ability to produce oil products. If a terrorist who knew what he was doing was capable of taking out a unit, he'd go for some other unit. I'll avoid specifying which ones would be first on my list, but the notion that there's any point in not stating them is silly. Everyone with any knowledge of refining knows which units to hit to do the most to cripple a refinery.

As I said in my previous post, there's plenty of reason to believe that this isn't a terrorist attack. Of all the units in a refinery, damaging this one causes one of the least disruptions. I'm not saying that there won't be problems, but if they really wanted to cripple a refinery, they'd go after one or more of several other units. If they were capable of doing this kind of sabotage, they wouldn't have hit this unit.

Actually, the governmental agency that does much of the root cause investigation these days is called the U.S. Chemical Hazard and Safety Board. They are on the web at www.csb.gov and have a pretty good site. I try to read all of the reports that they do on these incidents because my work involves trying to mitigate problems several steps before they reach this point. I'm still not certain that I believe that the government should have this agency and be doing this kind of investigation. However, as long as our tax dollars are being spent this way, I'm going to get all the benefit that I can.

No, it has not been forgotten. The electric utility here is spending a LARGE amount of money, relative to previous years, inspecting and strengthening the electric transmission system.

At least one Texas agency will also investigate. And, of course, the first lawsuits have already been filed.

I heard that on local news coming home.

Al-Qaeda carries through on stated goal from recent video, fbi says not terrorism.

And TWA 800 just blew up. It makes me wonder if Clintoon is still running things.

"Another group, Army of the Levant, also posted an Internet statement on Thursday claiming responsibility for the blast at the BP (BP.L: Quote, Profile, Research) plant in Texas City, Texas"

I remember Oscar of the Levant.

IMO, 800 wasn't claimed because of Al Qaida's bigger plans and they didn't want attention brought to the airline industry pre 9/11.
