Floridians could shoot anyone who invades their homes or cars with the intention of harming them, under a bill that got preliminary approval today in the Senate.
The bill by Sen. Durrell Peaden, R-Crestview, basically says that you don't have to back away from a confrontation. Under existing law, people can be prosecuted if they don't first try to find a way to escape from a confrontation.
Sen. Steve Geller, D-Hallendale, unsuccessfully tried to amend the bill so that it would only apply to homes, cars and other private locations - not confrontations on the street. Geller said he supported the old concept that "a man's home is his castle," and thought people should be able to defend themselves against carjackers, but he didn't want shootouts on the street if they could be avoided.
The Senate shouted down his amendment in a voice vote, and scheduled Peaden's bill for final action on Wednesday.
If approved, the bill (SB 436) will go to the House, where a similar measure is pending. With 82 cosponsors, the House bill (HB 249) is assured passage.
Floridians, call in your support! Can we have a bump for the Second Amendment and the individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms?
Yea!
Florida mite actually do something RIGHT? ;-D
hip-hip-hooray!
And on a similar note.....

Makes sense to me...but the guberment doesn't like it when you play with their taxbase...best to loose a few sheep to save the whole flock in their minds...
Does this include hospices?
It's a bone to Terri people. Good. It's more important than Terri I agree-- NOW save TERRI ALREADY!
Florida needs this to be a law?!
That such a bill needs any support certainly proves the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution isn't worth the paper it's written on.
...Floridians could shoot anyone who invades their homes or cars with the intention of harming them...
I believe, up until now, that it has only been legal to shoot people WITHOUT the intention of harming them so this is a big step forward in the harming people movement.
Your Honor, I was using the muzzle flash from my .44 to light the way of my hasty retreat.....
I like the way you think.
The 2A only applies to militias (/B.S.)
'sides ... we miss ya.
THEN: Your Honor, the defendant did not scurry away when confronted. Had he surrendered his belongings and fled, my client's (son/husband, etc.) would be alive today. The defendant misread the threat to himself here and appeared to value 'possessions' more than human life. I don't feel safe living amongst individuals with this type of twisted morality.
NOW: Your driver's license and registration check out fine, sir. Here is your weapon, have a nice day.
And, as everyone knows, it's really hard to run backward so I was running forward, and......
I don't know, but have you seen those flame throwers installed on some cars to deal with car jackers? If I am not mistaken, I think it was in South Africa.
I don't live in FL, but this sounds like bad news to me: "Under existing law, people can be prosecuted if they don't first try to find a way to escape from a confrontation." OK, let me get this straight. Someone points a gun at you (or someone in your family) in your house after just having busted in the door. Step 1, run away from the criminal or, Step 2 get shot while trying to escape? Insane.
All the Left Wing BS that has gradually accrued in the States really needs to go into the ashbin of history. The gun control movement is out of control. The Left wants to take us all collectively away from our origins as a Great Nation, treat us as Sheeple, etc and we can not let this process (read: assault) continue any longer. Time to dust off the good old Constitution, eh? Rights are not bestowed, nor should we let our liberal masters deign to confer upon us what is already ours.
