Just heard on Fox....so sad.
^^^^
Except in courtrooms hearing cases brought by Michael Schiavo.
I understand your passion over Terri's plight, but slavery does not enter into this. There is no involuntary servitude taking place here. Please rethink your comparisons.
You should withdraw your statement. First of all you provided no evidence supportin your claim and second of all when I went to your website and clicked on his name after a search I ended up in the ether. Now I know why you haven't presented any evidence supporting your assertion.
More to the point, Hammersfahr's case was adjudicated in the Florida "Courts" and he came out with license and reputation intact. Now, you're a big believer in Florida Courts, how come you don't support them in this case?
If any one tries to tell you this MD is a quack like I have seen on other threads..ask yourself why our state reps/mds voted yes. Are they all quacks too?
Impression:
The patient is not in coma.
She is alert and responsive to her environment.
She responds to specific people best.
She tries to please others by doing activities for which she gets verbal praise.
She responds negatively to poor tone of voice.
She responds to music.
She differentiates sounds from voices.
She differentiates specific people's voices from others.
She differentiates music from stray sound.
She attempts to verbalize.(!!!!!)
She has voluntary control over multiple extremities
She can swallow.(!!!!)
She is partially blind
She is probably aphasic and has a degree of receptive aphasia.
She can feel pain.
On this last point, it is interesting to observe that the records from Hospice show frequent medication administered for pain by staff.
With respect to specifics and specific recommendations in order to carry out the instructions of the Second District Court of Appeal:
From a neurological standpoint: The patient appears to be partially blind.
She needs a full opthamological (eye) evaluation and visual evoked potentials done to flash and checkerboard patters. The opthamological examination is to evaluate her retina and her ophthalmic nerve to try to determine the cause of her visual limitations and if any treatment exists. The evoked potentials looks at the nerve between the eye and the visual centers in the brain, to see if there is treatable damage and the type of damage, if any in these areas.
This is important, as for individuals to interact with her...
*snip*
Communication: She can communicate. She needs a Speech Therapist, Speech Pathologist, and a communications expert to evaluate how to best communicate with her and to allow her to communicate and for others to communicate with her.
Also, a treatment plan for how to develop better communication needs to be done.
*snip*
ENT: The patient can clearly swallow, and is able to swallow approximately 2 liters of water per day (the daily amount of saliva generated). Water is one of the most difficult things for people to swallow. It is unlikely that she currently needs the feeding tube.(!!!!!) She should be evaluated by an Ear Nose and Throat specialist, and have a new swallowing exam.
*snip*
Her physical exam and videotapes also suggest a spinal cord injury is also present, as she has much better control over he face, head, and neck, than over her arms and legs.
This reminds one of a person with a spinal cord injury who has good facial control, but poor use of arms and legs. It is possible that a correctable spinal abnormality such as a herniated disk may be found that could be treated and result in better neurological functioning. This should be looked for, as may be treatable.
Thus, there may be an injured disk or spinal cord; the disk injury is more treatable, the spinal cord injury, if present without a disk injury, may be more difficult to treat.
A person with a spinal cord injury and hypoxic encephalopathy will need different treatment and rehab recommendations than one who just has a hypoxic encephalopathic.
Interestingly, I have seen this pattern of mixed brain (cerebral) and spinal cord findings in a patient once before, a patient who was asphyxiated.

(btw, I don't need this Dr's word that Terri should be kept alive. Handicapped people shouldn't be murdered by starvation, regardless of what their potential rehabilitation is, just because their spouse doesn't want them around any more...).
That's silly.
There are valid comparisons to be made relating to federalism, courts and idiots.
For some - they're on satellite and on some cable systems, but not widely available.
"I don't believe a moral person should consider the consequences, the next election, world opinion or his/her own legacy before doing the right thing."
No argument from me on that; however, one doesn't need many hands or feet to tote up the number of moral people involved in politics. I'll bet the ranch that Karl Rove has considered the consequences before offering his advice to W., and I'll also bet that it was right along the lines of my original post.
The word which is a lie in the quote is "equally". What the schindlers wanted was for michael to pay them somewhere around 10 grand that he owed to them.
MS in the two years in florida had six jobs for brief times. Terri was the breadwinner. They moved into her family's house to cut expenses. He promised rent, it was not delivered.j
He owed them money. He did not pay. They were not demanding equal division of his money. That is a distortion meant to paint the schindlers who have spent almost all they have trying to keep terri alive.
Because you haven't taken the time to sift through all the information about Hammesfahr on www.quackwatch.org does not mean it doesn't exist. It's there for anyone who wants to take the time to check it out.
mikey probably thought he could get rid of her within 6 months.
Why someone on this very thread is trying to claim this award winning Dr is a quack!
A certain someone who agrees with Micael's brothers, and enjoys being contrary, I might add...
(Don't believe everything you read on an Internet Site).
"I would put dextrose in Terri's mouth to counteract it. This happened about five times on my shift, as I recall"
Depending on the dose and type of insulin, and only treating the insulin shock orally, you could have to counteract ONE does of insulin several times.
Nowhere have I seen this situation described more poignantly or accurately.
Thank you for your post.
"Some physicians believe that Terri could be rehabilitated to some extent, at least so that she would be able to swallow oral feedings and eliminate the need for the tube. She should be allowed to try, but so far her husband has blocked every attempt to see if she can swallow. Doctors have offered pro bono treatment, if money is the barrier for her husband.
"Although severely disabled, some believe that she does have the capacity to communicate a desire to live. The husband has obstructed efforts at rehabilitation or independent assessments of his wife's true state.
"Where are the "compassionate end-of-life" groups such as the Robert Wood Johnson "Last Acts" initiative, and why aren't they weighing in on this?
"The ethical question for her nurses and physicians is whether they will cooperate in carrying out a death warrant.
"And the ethical question for all of us is whether we will allow the state to obstruct the efforts of people who want to provide medical care to a patient who wants to receive it.
"If we go down that path, who's to say what treatment the state will prevent you from getting."

That is based upon testimony from both the Schindlers and Michael.
I guess all the doctors in this organization are quacks too by your definition.

For Immediate Release:
AAPS Doctors: Schindler-Schiavo is NOT a "death with dignity" issue
The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) issued this statement from Jane M. Orient, M.D. in response to the emergency action of the Florida legislature to reinstate feeding and hydration of Terri Schindler-Schiavo:
"Terri Schindler-Schiavo has won a temporary stay from execution by a method too cruel to be used for convicted criminals. And yet her husband's attorney is trying to spin it into a "death with dignity issue" with his comments on Tuesday.
"He says it's cruel to begin rehydration. The opposite is true - dehydration is a cruel, painful death. It is unconscionable that the state would have allowed removal of her feeding tube in the first place-it's nothing less than state-sponsored euthanasia.
"She is not dependent on advanced medical interventions. Nothing is mechanically beating her heart, or forcing oxygen into her lungs. She is simply being fed through a gastrostomy tube. Would we allow a retarded child to be starved to death?

Im sure you will like the judges that President Hillary nominates to the court.
