Who heads your GOP dream ticket? (Tancredo whacking Limbaugh in online presidential poll)

In another sign Americans are looking for outlets to express their concerns over illegal immigration, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., is handily beating conservative icon Rush Limbaugh in an online poll on who would make the best Republican candidate for president in 2008.

Tancredo is the chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and a leader of those calling for immediate and dramatic policy changes to restrict illegal traffic over the borders. Limbaugh is America's most popular radio talk-show host with more than 20 million listeners every week and is considered a kingmaker for the Republican Party.

The poll is organized by a St. Louis Republican survey company that specializes in automated polling. Survey Saint Louis has been commissioned by Bush-Cheney '04, the Republican National Committee and several statewide candidates in Missouri.

The Tancredo-Limbaugh match-up is part of the company's "Presidential March Madness" sweepstakes that began March 17 with pair-ups of 64 possible candidates for the GOP nomination in 2008. In the first round, Tancredo beat Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., 73.9 percent to 26.1 percent with more than 2,000 votes cast. Early voting in the Tancredo vs. Limbaugh contest showed the congressman with an even bigger percentage.

Tancredo has been the biggest vote-getter in the contest to date.

Each day through April 4, new surveys winnow the candidates down to one mock GOP nominee.

In the first round, Rudy Giuliani defeated Gary Bauer, Newt Gingrich knocked off Bob Ehrlich, John Sununu overcame Jack Kemp, Rick Santorum beat Christi Todd Whitman, Dennis Hastert over Mike Rounds, Mitt Romney undermined Dan Quayle, Tom Ridge beat Dirk Kempthorne, George Pataki defeated Craig Benson, Norm Coleman whipped John Kyl, Tommy Franks conquered John Thune, Haley Barbour bounced J. Kennet Blackwell, Lindsey Graham over Chuck Hagel, Marc Racicot over Bob Taft and Pat Buchanan over Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Bill Frist, Sean Hannity, Tom Coburn, Mitch Daniels, Elizabeth Dole, Colin Powell, Tommy Thompson, Jeb Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Roy Blunt, Chuck Grassley, Sam Brownback, Bill Owens, Tim Pawlenty, J.C. Watts and George Allen all advanced to a second round scheduled for tomorrow.

condi rice seems to be a very classy lady, and i would love to see her change some of her beliefs so that i could possibly throw my support behind her. but she has some REAL troubling issues.

unless i'm mistaken she's a pro-abort. she doesn't have enough of a problem with the murder of unborn infants. granted, she doesn't want to allow the late term murders as opposed to the earlier term murders of unborn children.

i've seen other people listed on this thread as favorite picks who are really questionable.

People, don't give in to the whacky temptation to look at folks who are NOT thoroughly committed to conservatism as some type of hip up-and-comers.

at FR, there's been enough ass kissing and celeb gushing over folks who are clearly not qualified to have a conservative's vote.

give up the fad-of-the-moment-because-i'm-easily-manipulated-and-insecure-with-my-own-views/forget-conservatism mentality.

now, some possibilities for MY dream ticket:
Laura Ingraham
Ann Coulter.

yeah, i know it would never happen, but that's a dream, at least.

So we end up with death by many cuts, instead of a few big ones inflicted by the Dems.. But what choice is there I guess?

I understand your point, but I look at it like a decompression chamber to prevent the bends. The (political)pressure to the left or right has to be gradual or the (voters) body will rebel. Or look at it like a car traveling at 55 mph to the left. It has to slow down before it can go in reverse.

We are just ending a long cycle of socialist politics. The rats controlled our government for a long time. I expect Republicans will have and need a long time to correct it. We can reversed entitlements. Welfare reform proved that. It used to be you couldn't even talk about changing SS. Just the threat of Evil Republicans taking away SS helped elect Clinton and filled coffers of the AARP.

The real pay off is going to be the judges who will have a long term impact. The rats are obstructing some judges but I'm starting to think we will get them confirmed without using a nuclear option, but if not the obstructions will help us elect more Republicans in 06( hopefully enough to get 60 Senate seats) but we are already confirming some great judges to replace rat judges. And it's happening on state levels too. Having majorities in state legislatures and Governor seats is helping elect Republican judges. The problem is it takes time.

The rats have not hit bottom yet. You can tell this because they are still fighting with us even though we have adopted all the popular positions. The rats will need to be broken before they will learn to listen to the people.

I agree with you about Tancredo. As important as the immigration issue is....I don't think he's that well-rounded as a politician.

I'm not so sure I agree about the ticket, but it could certainly be my dream sandwich.

Earlier this year, he derailed the President's wise proposal for immigration reform by totally mischaracterizing the President's proposal.

What flavor is the koolaid today?

Yeah, I don't expect it to happen--the GOP Elite wants open borders & could care less about US sovereignty...& are in the back pockets of the businesses who are begging for the cheap labor on top of that...but it's nice to know I could support Buchanan & Tancredo for President.

I don't think Tancredo should run for President anyway, 'cuz as far as I'm concerned, he is serving our nation EXACTLY in the best place possible--in the House. I say that 'cuz the Founders intended for the House to play the most important role when it comes to representing the people & federal law-making (that's why their lengths of office are for only 2 yrs): if we could find a LOT MORE folks like him (& the very honorable Rep. RON PAUL, especially) & elect them into the House, big government would disappear in a heartbeat--'cuz all spending bills must originate in the House...& there would be absolutely nothing the Senate, the White House, nor the Supreme Court could do about it if the House refuses to initiate spending legislation 1st & spend our $ on unconstitutional bills.

Have faith in the Mr. Bush. He knows what he is doing.

Just as our President proved his genius in the liberation of Iraq, so he will solve the problem at the border - assuming hapless ninnies like Tancredo stop their ridiculous grandstanding.

between that comment about the GOP wanting open borders and your tagline, I think I will just look at your posts as humor and not as serious comments from now on....

Not hardly...prove to me that the GOP (& President Bush especially) is making a serious attempt @ patrolling our borders. I DARE YA!

& as far as my Tagline is concerned, lemme paraphrase what the Apostle Paul said in the book of Romans:

"For I am not ashamed of my smoking of pot."

Hunh. I didn't know Hunter S Thompson had done a translation of Romans.
