In another sign Americans are looking for outlets to express their concerns over illegal immigration, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., is handily beating conservative icon Rush Limbaugh in an online poll on who would make the best Republican candidate for president in 2008.
Tancredo is the chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and a leader of those calling for immediate and dramatic policy changes to restrict illegal traffic over the borders. Limbaugh is America's most popular radio talk-show host with more than 20 million listeners every week and is considered a kingmaker for the Republican Party.
The poll is organized by a St. Louis Republican survey company that specializes in automated polling. Survey Saint Louis has been commissioned by Bush-Cheney '04, the Republican National Committee and several statewide candidates in Missouri.
The Tancredo-Limbaugh match-up is part of the company's "Presidential March Madness" sweepstakes that began March 17 with pair-ups of 64 possible candidates for the GOP nomination in 2008. In the first round, Tancredo beat Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., 73.9 percent to 26.1 percent with more than 2,000 votes cast. Early voting in the Tancredo vs. Limbaugh contest showed the congressman with an even bigger percentage.
Tancredo has been the biggest vote-getter in the contest to date.
Each day through April 4, new surveys winnow the candidates down to one mock GOP nominee.
In the first round, Rudy Giuliani defeated Gary Bauer, Newt Gingrich knocked off Bob Ehrlich, John Sununu overcame Jack Kemp, Rick Santorum beat Christi Todd Whitman, Dennis Hastert over Mike Rounds, Mitt Romney undermined Dan Quayle, Tom Ridge beat Dirk Kempthorne, George Pataki defeated Craig Benson, Norm Coleman whipped John Kyl, Tommy Franks conquered John Thune, Haley Barbour bounced J. Kennet Blackwell, Lindsey Graham over Chuck Hagel, Marc Racicot over Bob Taft and Pat Buchanan over Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Bill Frist, Sean Hannity, Tom Coburn, Mitch Daniels, Elizabeth Dole, Colin Powell, Tommy Thompson, Jeb Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Roy Blunt, Chuck Grassley, Sam Brownback, Bill Owens, Tim Pawlenty, J.C. Watts and George Allen all advanced to a second round scheduled for tomorrow.
It's an online poll, anyone can vote. Probably the DUmmies found it.
Limbaugh is more capitalist than conservative.
While I certainly would not want Tancredo to win the nomination, as I do not think he could be viable in a general election, its good for him to run in the primary.
People like him, and others can tilt the primary further right, and make canidates compete, and also better battle tested for the general election.
Look at Kerry's primary, they guy went through unscathed, while Dean and co took all the heat, when general election time came, it started become clear what kerry's problems were (liar, gun grabber, left wing anti-american, disgrace to the military uniform, etc).
I disagree that it was the pro-lifers that made the difference in this last election. Pretty clearly it was the fear of terrorism that led that charge. Face it, no single social issue holds sway in this country. In order to be elected, a President must swing voters from all parties to his side. A sizeable number of Democrats voted for GW. Whether that was a prolife vote or a progun vote is problematic. Take for example the case of West-by-God Virginia. A state where the first day of deer season is a school holiday. A state which has gone democrat in nearly every election for the last (IIRC) 50 years or so before the 2000 election. See what happens if GW reauthorizes (and the 'Pubbies allow it to pass) an Assault Weapons Ban. I don't care if the Party of Lincoln runs Rev Billy Graham they lose. Period.
Who is to say that Fox won't be running things on the side? Puppet governments have been known to exists. As a matter of fact all you have to do is look at the Bush-Rove connection.
Very well put. He is nothing but a creature of low-rent Buchanonites, and all Americans of intelligence see thru that bull.
All heed this stern warning! All Freepers who support Tancredo are putting their conservative credentials into jeopardy. Do not fall prey to this charlatan. You must continue to back President Bush!
There are a lot fewer single-issue pro-life or pro-choice voters in the country than a lot of people believe; they're just really vocal.
I agree, Rush must remain on the air doing what only he can do.
Jeb Bush-Rice.
OTOH, NRA folks will stand in a driving rain, a blizzard or until the polls close to make their point. Four million NRA members, and 100+ million gunowners beyond that? How many of those want to keep their guns?
Where did they take this poll, at LoonyPlace officially known as LP or LibertyPost.
This guy will never ever be the GOP candidate, and anyone who think otherwise is insanely delusional and better check in a mental hospital very soon.
Very good point.
Is this a new black helicopter theory? Is this a new insane conspiracy theory on how President Bush is going to surrender the sovereignty of the United States to Mexico?
If you want to spread these insane theories go to LoonyPlace (LibertyPost).
This is like asking the general populace if they want Oprah to be president; which they did.
Tancredo is a johnny one note,of NO importance nor chance at a run for the presidency, but an extremely small, but overtly vocal pack of blind sycophants here.
And money. LOL
" If you want to spread these insane theories go to LoonyPlace (LibertyPost)."
Simply amazing how folks like you will stand in line for the party punch. Drink up!!!
Looks like it,doesn't ? :-)
