In another sign Americans are looking for outlets to express their concerns over illegal immigration, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., is handily beating conservative icon Rush Limbaugh in an online poll on who would make the best Republican candidate for president in 2008.
Tancredo is the chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and a leader of those calling for immediate and dramatic policy changes to restrict illegal traffic over the borders. Limbaugh is America's most popular radio talk-show host with more than 20 million listeners every week and is considered a kingmaker for the Republican Party.
The poll is organized by a St. Louis Republican survey company that specializes in automated polling. Survey Saint Louis has been commissioned by Bush-Cheney '04, the Republican National Committee and several statewide candidates in Missouri.
The Tancredo-Limbaugh match-up is part of the company's "Presidential March Madness" sweepstakes that began March 17 with pair-ups of 64 possible candidates for the GOP nomination in 2008. In the first round, Tancredo beat Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., 73.9 percent to 26.1 percent with more than 2,000 votes cast. Early voting in the Tancredo vs. Limbaugh contest showed the congressman with an even bigger percentage.
Tancredo has been the biggest vote-getter in the contest to date.
Each day through April 4, new surveys winnow the candidates down to one mock GOP nominee.
In the first round, Rudy Giuliani defeated Gary Bauer, Newt Gingrich knocked off Bob Ehrlich, John Sununu overcame Jack Kemp, Rick Santorum beat Christi Todd Whitman, Dennis Hastert over Mike Rounds, Mitt Romney undermined Dan Quayle, Tom Ridge beat Dirk Kempthorne, George Pataki defeated Craig Benson, Norm Coleman whipped John Kyl, Tommy Franks conquered John Thune, Haley Barbour bounced J. Kennet Blackwell, Lindsey Graham over Chuck Hagel, Marc Racicot over Bob Taft and Pat Buchanan over Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Bill Frist, Sean Hannity, Tom Coburn, Mitch Daniels, Elizabeth Dole, Colin Powell, Tommy Thompson, Jeb Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Roy Blunt, Chuck Grassley, Sam Brownback, Bill Owens, Tim Pawlenty, J.C. Watts and George Allen all advanced to a second round scheduled for tomorrow.
Trancedo is going to need to show he is more than just a one issue wonder for me to vote for him....
and that is EXACTLY what he is, a one issue wonder.
What a waste of time and effort.
Then Tancredo should run for governor of Colorado.
Romney-Rice
Rice-Tancredo
Oh yeah, just what we need to do...run a LIBERAL RINO from the north east! Romney is a gun grabbing RINO. Better to put Condi at the top of the ticket. OR Jeb and Condi.
With the left morphing into a "hey, being prolife isn't bad" chorus, we need to have staunchly PROLIFE candidates, not RINO's and those that are "mildly prochoice". The Republican party is staunchly prolife as a platform (and as a voting block- it's the prolifers that elected W this last time) and we have to stick with that. Otherwise, the Dems are going to nomindate a prolife candidate in 08, take that vote away from us and we lose. Period.
Well .. to be fair .. Rush has said many times that to want that position you have to have a fire in your belly - and he claims that he does not have that desire at all.
So .. I'm fairly confident Rush is relieved he's not expected to take the helm.
Tancredo is nothing but a troublemaker at the President's expense. Earlier this year, he derailed the President's wise proposal for immigration reform by totally mischaracterizing the President's proposal.
Last week he went freelancing about how the US should recognize Taiwan. Doing so only embrarasses President Bush and empowers the Red China
Until this ego-maniac curbs his prima donna attitude, he does not deserved to be seriously considered for county dog catcher, much less president
However, I'm not worried. Online polls have about as much meaning as John Kerry had truthfulness.
Rice/McClintock maybe. I dont want someone who is going to throw away hundreds of billions on another country though.
we will see as he attempts to branch out and make a name for himself...
and then my guess is that he will join the ranks of Buchanan and Peroutka and Badnarik as marginal characters/candidates who won't ever get a big party (aka a party with a chance in hell at being elected) to endorse him.
you watch...Rice will redefine her position on Abortion and will run as VP to one of the ex or current govenors out there in 2008.....
It's the same crowd of clowns that want to run Alan Keyes for every single Senate seat in the country.
"Tancredo is nothing but a troublemaker at the President's expense. Earlier this year, he derailed the President's wise proposal for immigration reform by totally mischaracterizing the President's proposal."
In other words he didn't swallow GW's party punch. The proposal needed derailing!!! We can be thankful for some politicians that don't take GW's word as gospel.
"Run Tancredo and you insure Democrat control of the White House and Congress for another 40 years."
Run someone like Bush again and you insure that V. Fox will control the White House forever.
Until this ego-maniac curbs his prima donna attitude, he does not deserved to be seriously considered for county dog catcher, much less president.
Tancredo is just following the marching orders given by his mentor, Pat Buchanan. The Buchanan/Tancredo group have one mission and that is to destroy the Republican Party. They feel that because the party has rejected Buchanan and his ideology then it must be destroyed so the "true conservatives" of their movement can take over.
I've heard Rush say more than once that he would never run--doesn't want to take the pay cut.
WHO is voting in these polls. How could Norm Coleman a MN Dimwit turned RINO out poll John Kyl a real Republican?
Fox is gone in 2006 but why let facts get in the way of a good anti-Bush rant?
