Some backers won't count him out. Others don't want a "shopworn" candidate.
WASHINGTON - John Kerry had come so close; on election night, before the dream died, his chief strategist had even said, "Let me be the first to call you Mr. President." Yet there he was on Inauguration Day, a mere spectator wearing a wan smile in the cold wind.
And when President Bush took the oath of office, Sen. Tom Harkin, a Democrat from Iowa seated beside Kerry, placed his gloved right hand on the vanquished candidate's spine. He rubbed up and down, repeatedly. And as Bush intoned, "... so help me God," Harkin finished with a pair of gentle pats.
Those gestures spoke volumes about Kerry's sense of loss. And Kerry would not have the luxury of recuperating in private. He couldn't grow a beard and vanish, as Al Gore did; he couldn't go to Hawaii and teach college, as Mike Dukakis finally did. No, Kerry had to go back to his day job - becoming the first losing presidential candidate to return to the Senate since George McGovern in 1973.
But unlike McGovern, who stayed low-profile after a landslide defeat, John Kerry is already working hard on a resurrection. In a rudderless, leaderless Democratic Party, he is determined to fill the vacuum.
And don't be shocked if he launches another presidential candidacy in 2008, despite the fact that no U.S. senator has ever run, lost, and won a subsequent nomination. History notwithstanding, however, it may not be easy for Kerry to simply walk away, not after winning 59 million votes - although there are plenty of Democrats who wish that he would.
There he was Thursday, for example, in a Washington hotel, with that familiar ramrod posture, and the familiar portentous voice projecting...

True, true; and, of course, this was back when we didn't "know" all the inner workings of a presidential candidate, nor did we care as long as they got the job done.
And we didn't hear all this girlie men metrosexual feelings BS; when Clinton left office, I felt like we had been on an eight year long national therapy session!
NO MAS!!
Oh Howlin, around here lately it is like a bunch of cats in a roomfull of rockers what with the Terri stuff. I have muscle spasms in my shoulders and neck from endless freeping. I have to swear off this for a few days.
I really doubt that although your swine metaphor is correct. The Shrill may indeed garner the dem nomination and tens of millions of votes, but she never, ever will be elected as Commander In Chief of The Armed Forces. This country has enough kooks to do real damage, but fortunately not enough of them to place The Shrill as leader of the free world and in charge to the mightiest military in the history of the planet.
Think about all the folks that will quit the military and those that will not enlist or re-enlist, it will be BIG news come campaign time - and the notion of The Shrill as CIC will interestingly be enough to force a draft because of attrition. Even the dems will have to railroad her first because of this.

I didn't think Kerry had a spine. Maybe Harkin was just trying to find it.
First of all, he collected two-years' salary for a job from which he had already vanished for two years so he could pursue his ridiculously vapid candidacy. Didn't even have the decency to resign, as Dole did. Second of all, he was virtually invisible during the 20 years he was in the senate prior to being AWOl.
Isn't THAT the truth........LOL. I'm looking forward to my grandson's birthday party this afternoon to have some sensible talk with some four year olds!
Well, I just got hooked again,,this is like CRACK COCAINE.
Gwen Ifill just said GWB was a great president. I gotta go see the pigs fly and then shower and do some laundary.
I thought of the same thing, and while it may be possible (in the same sense that it may be possible that I will win the multimillion dollar lottery) it is not likely.
The biggest difference between Kerry and Nixon is that the polictial tide has slowly been moving towards the right and Nixon was going in the same direction.
"If 4600 voters in New Hampshire had switched to Bush, Ohio wouldn't have mattered."
Plus, 6000 in Wisconsin. Or it could have been 33,000 in Maine, or 38,000 in Oregon, or 50,000 in Minnesota, or 73,000 in Pennsylvania, or 83,000 in Michigan...shall I keep going?
I am sick of hearing about 60,000 Ohio voters. PRESIDENT Bush WON 2532 counties and lost only 581 counties.
W...STILL PRESIDENT !!!!!
the mexicans landed a man on the moon in 1917.
does that count?
#42 - ROTFLMAO!!!
On or off what??!!
I hope you're right!
I wonder who has a copy of her FBI files?
Pass the toilet paper.
Soros has the files that the Ryadi's had on the both of them, maybe. I believe that Soros and his friends like Peter Lewis want to buy a presidency and they won't take the chances that it would take for her to win, IMHO. Teh first test will start next year with a visit to Iowa or New Hampshire.
If 60,000 people switch their vote from Bush, to Kerry, it is a swing of 120,000 votes.
a switch of 60,000 from bush to kerry results in a change of 120,000 more then enough to overcome the 118,000 that bush won by...do the mathg and you will see the truth...
