TEHRAN (AFP) - When behind the wheel, Iranian women have to put up with all sorts of verbal abuse from the testosterone-charged types that dominate the Islamic republic's highways -- such as being told to tend to a washing machine rather than a car.
But Iran (news - web sites)'s women drivers, most of whom are clearly ill at ease navigating the anarchic road network, now have a national idol: a young woman nicknamed "Little Schumacher".
Laleh Seddigh, 28, is fast emerging as one of Iran's foremost race car drivers, leaving the best of the men racers behind in her saloon car.
"Resistance from men does not bother me," Seddigh told AFP at a recent track race event held at Tehran's Azadi stadium. "Once I get on the track I like to use my technical skills, take control and dominate the other drivers."
At the race, the petite woman racer caused yet another upset by beating off her fellow 12 Proton teammates -- all of whom are men -- much to the delight of the small group of female fans watching from their part of the segregated stadium.

Like most Persian women, looks like she's a hottie. Hard to tell with the helmet and jumpsuit though.

Sometimes you wonder if the reporters proof-read what they write. And sometimes you wonder if it's actually an attempt at humor...

Persian women as a rule seem to be good looking.
They seem to tend toward the extremes - sublimely hot or clock-stopping ugly.
I missed that and I usually get those.
I think the ugliness is a result of a harsh environment. You'll notice that the young women tend to be pretty, but after they get married - repeated beatings, hard work, and child bearing take their toll.
They look ready for retirement when they reach 35 years old.
Western women are considered beautiful into their 40's quite often... usually because the physical stresses of keeping a home, child bearing, and labor are less strenuous. Child bearing especially without good medical care can result in premature aging for women.
Take away the cultural domination imposed by their religion of men over women, and women in that region will increase their life spans and overall quality of life.

That is a cool story. (except for how difficult they make it for her)
What do they run over there? They are those rally-cars right? Like souped up Mazdas and what not?
