There are two new Windows 98 security updates available. You can find them at this address (direct Link to Microsoft website).

They are quick updates and do not require you to start your computer. If you are using Windows 98, best to get them.

Also, if you are using the old version of Ad Aware by Lavasoft, you should get the second edition. It picks up a whole lot of spyware the first edition does not catch and even updates on first edition will not do it.

I run Spy Sweeper (Webroot) and find it to be very "user-friendly" and very effective. I keep Spy Sweeper running all the time, but I also have AdAware 2.0 (Lavasoft) that I run once in awhile as a backup. I don't recall it ever catching anything missed by Spy Sweeper, but you never know

I had that product on my computer. I was suspicious of its effectiveness because it always found the "welchia worm" everytime I ran it, even if I ran it again immediately. How's that possible?Something seemed phony to me.
So I deleted it.
I went back to Ad-aware from Lavasoft. It's free and hasn't found the welchia worm yet. Ad-aware from Lavasoft is totally free. Plus, I paid a fee for the Webroot product. Also when I installed the Webroot update it forced itself on me, popping up everytime I signed on and I couldn't cancel it. I hated that! and soon deleted the entire program even though I'd paid for it.
call me: Happy with Lavasoft.

It's not free if you want the update packages. I just got a new update package yesterday on my Ad Aware (I paid their fee). Spy Sweeper also has a free version, again, if you don't care for regular updates (I pay the fee for that, too, and do get the updates.

There's new spyware and trojans popping up all the time, so I feel more comfortable staying updated.

I have something on my computer called "Ad Watch SE", which is apparently and adjunct of Ad Aware. It seems to be fairly useless. Every time I load it up, it gives me a bunch of "Warning" popups, and I can either "Accept" or "Block". Clicking "Accept" makes the popups go away, but clicking "Block" does nothing. Is this Ad Watch legit to your knowledge? Know anything about it?

Bookmarked, running two Pentium II's using Windows 98 Second edition. My desktop PC is a 266 MHz model and my laptop (which I'm using now) is 366 MHz. Right now, I disconneted the desktop and got a '486SX/25 running in its place, Mom prefers the old PC with DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1 plus I like to steal a few minutes and play the old Sim City game. B-)

This laptop was pitifully slow until I cut the cache size in Mozilla from 50 megs down to 20 megs. I'll read the tips here to see what I can do.

My old pc has W98. Still better than that infernal xp pro that sits gathering dust on my other desk. While I'm at it, I say Mozilla sucks, at least while it's running with my W98.

Try cutting your Mozilla cache size down, I was set at 50 megs and cut it down to 20 megs, so far, I haven't seen it run slow again. It was so bad that when I swithed apps, the HD would chatter and it would take a minimum of a minute or two to switch between Outlook Express and Mozilla.

'Cuz my computer is over 6 yrs old (a terribly slow 56k dial up) & Windows 98 is all I've got!

But it beats having NOTHING.

You too, huh? My Gateway is 7 years old (PII/266) and my IBM Thinkpad (PII/366) is almost 6 years old, I usually use the laptop most of the time. The third PC I have is a 1992 Dell '486SX/25, Mom still uses it. Sure I can;t run the latest games, but if I can run Diablo and Diablo II on this thing, I'm happy as a pig in crap. B-)

Now-a-days, you need two computers so you can access the internet to repair the one that fails.

I know! Heck, when I was CIO for a small startup (later failed), I had to diagnose a problem with an ethernet card that way by pulling it out, looking for the brand and using another computer to look for info and the drivers for it. I did get it to work. I know my both PII's are internet capable and I used one or the other to work when one was down and if I had to in a pinch, got Mom's old '486SX/25 from 1992 that I can use. I know I can only go 9600 baud, 4 megs RAM, 120 meg HD and 256 colors but if it meant using that or no internet/Freeping, well as they say "any port in the storm." B-)

My old computer has Windows 98. The wife uses it to do bookkeeping and word processing. It runs well for the applications I run.

Mom HATES MS Word, she still swears by Word Perfect 5.1 DOS and Windows 3.1 editions. she gets more use out of the 1992 Dell than the 1998 Gateway.

My new Dell has Windows XP.

I'll be willing to go to XP if I get a new system with it installed or when I get enough bucks to try upgrading the Gateway, money is a bit tight now, but at least I can do everything in Win 98 as my friend can do in XP.

Thanks, I'll try that. I'm thinking that with all the spyware protection I've loaded in, I'm lucky the puter works at all. I had a nasty spyware problem a few months ago...I think it was an about:blank homepage hijeacking, but never did find out for sure. That's when I started using Mozilla. The spyware problem ended but Mozilla takes its sweet time loading some pages.

Then there's the "send link" thing. I like to put shortcuts on desktop. With IE that was simple enough. With Mozilla I still haven't figured out a quick way to do that. "Send link" gets me their email program. ("No, dammit! I don't want to write a letter!")
