Boeing-Wichita Issues 8,100 Layoff Notices
Friday March 11, 4:00 pm ET
The 60-day notices went to 5,200 hourly and 2,900 salaried production and service workers, said Boeing spokesman Dick Ziegler. Engineers have not yet received pink slips.
The notices are part of the separation and re-employment process required as the Chicago-based aerospace leader transfers assets to Toronto-based Onex. Workers were asked to sign waivers allowing release of their personnel information to be considered for new employment with Onex.
Onex is forming a separate aircraft company in Wichita, which it has temporarily named Midwestern Aircraft Systems until a more permanent name is determined, said Ziegler, who also received a layoff notice.
In a memo sent Wednesday to employees, Boeing executive Jeff Turner assured employees that receiving a notice is not reason to panic or to assume they would not have a job with Onex.
Onex agreed last month to buy Boeing's massive commercial aircraft plant in Wichita, plus other work sites in Tulsa and McAlester, Okla., for $900 million cash and the assumption of $300 million debt. The sale is part of Boeing's strategy to focus its commercial aircraft business on design and final assembly.
Tell me how good unions are. The Pittsburgh Steelers home has no steel mills remaining. (OK, there's a small one remaining in Hazelwood a few miles out of town).
Homestead, Aliquippa, East Pittsburgh, Braddock, etc. are all gone. Thank you greedy unions.
Considering how many DC-9s and MD-80s were built and are still still being used, why couldn't Boeing get any interest in getting more orders for the 717?
Thanks.
Thank you John McCain.
No kidding...just check your local public school.
IMO, Management sucks. They're criminals, they all band together to save their own jobs and the jobs of their friends, lovers, and relatives. They knew how to play various union reps off one against the other. The government agencies and the legal system support management in EEO cases instead of trying to stop discrimination (age discrimination and sex discrimination suits are tough to win. Racial discrimination suits are easier to win.)
(Donning my flame-retardant suit now.)
As an engineer whose first job out of school was in a unionized defense plant, I've seen it.
Does that include the approximately 50% of teachers, firemen, policemen, and all the other government workers?
Wow! I didn't know that all the firemen, policemen and other govt. workers in New York were socialists.
Wouldn't Hoffa have been a thug no matter where he would up, with exception to the last place he would up?
Was.

Could be a way to get cheap labor with H-IB visa's.
I know a few. Some of them are "conservative socialists" on the government gravy train and vote for Carolyn McCarthy. Many of them, of course, are not. Since cops retire relatively young, many even become independent businessmen.
In fact they aren't losing vote after vote. However, the votes that are winning are usually in the service industries. It would be nearly impossible to win an organization campaign in a manufacturing facility since Red China really gets ticked off over things like that.
I hope the guy got what he deserved. What was the charge and how long did he get? Were you successful in a civil suit.
Well, I know someone who just went through one of these at a very large and reputable luxury car dealership.
These people, if they are invited to apply for a job to begin with, will have to reapply for their old positions, and will find that their health and other benefits have likely changed also (gee, had a health condition? You probably weren't asked to reapply)
Do you have any idea how many conservatives are in the union halls? It's an on going fight to get the unions back to representing the membership and leave the social agenda alone.
If you think Sweeney of the AFL-CIO is well thought of you are wrong. However, it is like so many things, money talks. It is hard to campaign against him for election because outside money supports him strongly. It's a fight that is always worth fighting.
What union was it and what specifically what it was you saw?
Yes, I know that there are conservatives in unions, particularly in the building trades and law enforcement unions. This does not change the fact that 1. the largest segment of the organized workforce consists of government pencil pushers and lefty school teachers and 2. that I will choose to start my business in a right to work state and do everything in my power to keep it union free.
