The robustly liberal actor dismisses Internet rumors he plans to run against Connecticuts conservative Democratic senator, Joe Lieberman. "Itd be lunatic to try to get into politics at my age. I dont think Id have the stomach for it."
But he says he is worried by the policies of the Bush administration.
"I wish I felt a little more comfortable about the direction that were going," Newman said carefully. "It does not seem to be of the people, by the people and for the people. It seems to be about something else completely different.
"I think part of it is the medias fault for not being more aggressive and persistent and nasty and I think its the peoples fault for not paying attention. Thats not a good combination. It allows people in government to do pretty much what they want."

"I won't let a an actor's politics dicate what I watch and what I won't watch. "
I agree with you, but I have to tell you, sometimes it's hard to watch an actor whose politics are far left, or even far right. You see their message creeping into the work.
I love Newman's old films like Long Hot Summer, Hustler, Sweet Bird of Youth, From the Terrace, The YOung Philadelphians. The Verdict and Absence of Malice were great too. I mean he always would play these guys who were traditional and conservatives. In fact, I was surprised to hear that he's to the left. But actually, he's not way out in his thinking for me not to watch his movies.
I think he's settled in to that simple life where the most important thing on his mind most days is if he's regular or not.

Well at least this administration is not selling our nuclear secrets to China and N. Korea. Mr. Newman, I used to think you were the sexiest man alive..then the torch passed to Steve McQueen...now Mel Gibson carries the torch. My taste in heroes improved as I got older and wiser. I still won't buy your salad dressing.

"It does not seem to be of the people"
I agree - what election was he watching ..?? I guess 62 million voters is not enough for him to indicate the PEOPLE are making THEIR choice.
Paul - JUST SHUT UP AND ACT!!
But Newman does take a pro-nuclear stance (he believes it is an environmentally benign source of energy, and he's right about that), so I will find common ground with him on one issue, anyway. Hey, it's the proverbial "reaching out" I keep hearing about.
This says a lot about the pathology of this mindset.
They feel that their best strategy is to be aggressive, persistent and nasty. And if they fail, it was only because they weren't aggressive, persistent and nasty enough.
Its sad really.
LOL Other than "Road To Perdition" (which I liked), I can't think of any movies he's made in the last 15 or 20 years--I'm sure he made several, I just can't remember them :)
Says a guy that signed up last week.

"Fun Fact: Newman invested in the magazine The Nation in the mid-1990s. In 1997, he wrote an editorial for the magazine which parodied Senator Jesse Helms."
Other sources cite him as part owner.
Yes, very astute my friend, I did sign up last week! Nice to meet you too.
ROFL!
It's easier to avoid some lefty actors than it is others--like Alec Baldwin. Nine out of ten movies he makes stink so there's no big loss there. Same with Sarandon and her "life-partner" Tim Robbins (though I do overlook Robbins' liberalism when Shawshank Redemption is on).
Ditto. It's just sad that people have to let politics dictate every facet of their life. I don't care if Paul Newman is a card carrying commie, the man is a stud, a true patriot and a gentleman.
Politics have entered about every facet of life, you can't avoid it. To ignore it is irresponsible and letting it control your life will make you miserable. You have to do both.
100% agreement.
Then why did The People elect the administration? Paul must mean "It's not of the people I like, by the people I favor, and for the people who are my friends."
Has he always been a classless jerk or is he just senile?

YOu're right. They've put out some good work. Robbins was great in that baseball flick...and the one with sean penn last year... baldwin's movie of late suck wet dog fur.. you're right...
i'd just wish they'd STFU on their politics..
That does clear things up a bit.
Joe Lieberman "conservative?" What a laugh! Anyone who is not in bed with the looney left wing of the Demo party is conservative to these simpletons, I guess.
