An ax-wielding man rampaged through a Point Loma neighborhood yesterday, smashing into one home, trampling through several yards and darting into traffic before he was struck by a car on Catalina Boulevard, witnesses said.
The man, who was not identified, suffered internal and other injuries and was reported in critical condition at a hospital.
Authorities said he left a path of destruction, blood and debris over several blocks.
"This came right out of 'The Twilight Zone,' " San Diego police Sgt. Tom Carmody said.
About 7 a.m., a man came crashing through a rear glass door and landed in Reeve and Georgia Peterson's living room on Tarento Drive.
"I was reading the paper and having coffee when I saw this flash in my back yard," Reeve Peterson said. "This guy came running out of the bushes and ran right through our rear glass door."
When the man, dressed in a white T-shirt and shorts, landed on the wood floor, Peterson pounced on him. With his wife calling 911, Peterson struggled with the intruder and cut himself on the shards of glass, blood splattering on the floor and walls.
"I was scared to death," Peterson said.
So was Georgia Peterson.
"I was screaming," she said.
The man escaped by jumping through a front window. He ran into the street and into the path of a car driven by an off-duty police officer.
The man was thrown several feet by the impact, but got up and staggered to a second home. There, he grabbed a broken bottle from a backyard shed before darting into a third yard, where he ditched the bottle and armed himself with a pickax.
Employees of a swimming-pool maintenance company were in the yard at the time and quickly got out of the way.
"He spotted a full-size ax, dropped the pickax and used the larger ax to chop his way through a wooden gate," Carmody said.
Officers by that time were swarming to the neighborhood and soon confronted the man.
Refusing to drop the weapon, the man ran to Dupont Street, waving the ax in a threatening manner until he reached Catalina Boulevard and was hit by a car going about 50 mph.
"He was running with this big ax, blood dripping from the handle. He's completely covered in blood. It was unreal," said one resident who would not give his name.
Police were trying to determine what set the man off.
A biohazard cleanup company spent the day removing blood from sidewalks, yards, streets, houses and five cars.
I hope both axles went over Mr. Ax Wielder.
Now watch Ted Kennedy submit a bill to ban 'The Twilight Zone'.
Think how differently this would have ended in Texas...
Holy crap ping.
For cheery news, just "ax" ambrose...
;-)
It obviously wasn't his day.
He got hit by not one, but TWO cars.
One driven by an off duty cop.
Never bring a(n) __________ to a(n) __________ fight.
High on drugs, maybe?
I must have missed that episode of Twilight Zone with the ax-wielding maniac.
Ax, meet car.
I ax'ed him and ax'ed him to put that ax down.
No justice, no peace!

OK, I can understand this for the interior of the house, but wouldn't a garden hose have sufficed for the rest?
Postal employee?
WOW!
Was he killed?
He must have been drugged out of his mind...
