Fulton Co. Judge shot and killed in courthouse shooting (BREAKING Fri 9A)
WAGA-TV/WSB-TV Atlanta | 3.11.05

Posted on 03/11/2005 6:39:06 AM PST by mhking

This is a breaking news situation.

A man entered a courtroom in the Fulton County Courthouse this morning and shot a Fulton County Sheriff's deputy, a clerk and a judge; there are reports from both WSB and WAGA, the judge is deceased.

The perp has carjacked multiple vehicles -- now on his third -- and is still at large.

I've just come from downtown Atlanta, and the city is a madhouse.

I'm not offended by your posts. I discount any comments made by posters who feels the need to put a title in their name.

FoxNews is reporting that the green Honda is a 1987.

11 Live Atlanta is showing it as a 1997.

[Don't these people do any fact checking?]

I understand what you are saying, but this is part of the beauty of Free Republic.

Instead of sitting passively by (or talking/yelling at the TV), watching a breaking story, we can comment on the story as it develops, and actually read what others are thinking, in almost REAL-TIME.

Thoughts that come to mind at the time, may be forgotten, so, I think, there is no time like the present to post those views.

If people just want to read the posts having to do with the changing story, and skip by what you term "pontificating", then they are welcome to do so.

I was called not long ago; the case was a guy who was trafficing in cocaine (supposedly).

When the DA asked me if I could be fair, I said no. I was excused.

I hadn't heard of that.

Monday, I had to be in Chapel Hill with my daughter, was on I40 in the AM crunch near exit 312, and noticed a motorcyclist in the lane next to me wearing a ski mask with a skull face.

I wonder if it was just coincidence?

You should call the Raleigh police department and tell them. phone #919-420-2300

I still say he wasn't out on bail. We'll see.

Atlanta Fox channel reporting the shank was found on Nichols while entering the courtroom this past week. Supposedly there was a meeting afterwards in the Judge's chambers, but the reporters have not been able to find out what transpired at that meeting. If he'd been caught trying to bring a weapon into the courtroom, the Judge would have been within his rights to have this defendent in restraints in order to protect the court.

Why can't you be fair? I would enjoy being on a jury. I've only been called once, and wasn't even questioned then, they seated the jurors they needed before they got to me.

I heard that also. He was not out on bail. He had a mistrial last week. So, perhaps that precluded setting bail?

Cash Points, the name of the State Employees' Credit Union ATM, only permits $200 withdrawal at one time. Anybody who goes to any ATM at night is crazy.

If any of you who aren't from metro-Atlanta see this news conference, you will know, within about 30 seconds after it starts, how this all happened. The ineptitude on display will make you shiver.

Hindsight is always 20/20. No system is perfect. One of the prices way pay for the freedoms we enjoy and cherish is that those with no regard for others have the freedom to do horrendous things of this nature.

When I was in the police academy, I was told that the bulk of all police officers shot in the line of duty were wounded or killed by their own gun. A significant part of our defensive tactics training dealt with maintaining control of your weapon or relieving a suspect of control of his.

That said, most police officers never fire their gun in the line of duty, and many only draw their weapons on felony stops or certain domestic situations...That is to say, not often.

Complacency and taking "business as usual" for granted is a fault most people succumb to at some level.

Regardless of the lapses in security or mistakes that were made or even what sacrifices were burned at the altar of political correctness IMHO is sort of moot at this point.

In the end, it comes down to the decision of one man who chose to destroy four families in an act of complete and total disregard for anyone but himself. He has murdered, raped, kidnapped, and stolen and will continue to do so until he is stopped.

Don't count on the police taking justice into their own hands when they catch him. Unless they have a clear reason to shoot, they will conduct themselves professionally and place him under arrest. :(
