Gregoire declares drought emergency
10:01 PM PST on Thursday, March 10, 2005
Associated Press
OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, responding to predictions of the worst drought since 1977, on Thursday declared a statewide drought emergency.
Gregoire directed her Emergency Drought Committee to gear up an emergency command center, track and coordinate responses by state agencies and make sure state resources reach where they are needed.

She ordered the National Guard to prepare for combatting wildfires this summer and requested the Legislature to boost drought-related appropriations by an additional $8.2 million.

"While water shortages won't affect all areas of the state in precisely the same way, it seems very likely that all areas of our state will experience at least some level of drought this year," Gregoire said in remarks prepared for a late morning news conference in Yakima.

"We need to start taking action now, and all of us need to be part of the solution."

I saw Gov. Gregoire speak on this issue on NWCN it may be in the video clip on this link (I am a webbie TV so no access) I could not believe the remark she made, flupah (sp?) in her tv interview.

She said regarding ways to save water " ....flush less and brush every other tooth".

OK Gov. Hillary Look alike please explain how we are to brush every other tooth and how does this save water?

NWCN is a news channel that loops the same news stories hourly so I have heard this many time...yep I heard her right, brush every other tooth. LOL

It has been dry this year.

I love living on the rainy (forrest) on the Central Oregon Coast.

This year I have had allergies like I had 17yrs ago living in the Golden Hills of the East Bay Area Concord Cali. growing up.

They are telling us to clear brush for a fire season here, which is unheard of.

Our snow pack was nothing.

LOL Just saw her again saying "Brush every other tooth".

I am so mad at her for calling for a recount that cost Washintonians $800,000 bucks.

And she looks like Hillary Clinton to boot!

Hopefully we will get some heavy April showers.

I was born in Edmonds Wa. and lived approximately 10 years there total. I have lived about 23 here in Texas.

I always found it interesting how a state where it rains constantly can call for a water shortage emergency in March. It happens every year it seems.

In Texas where it reaches 100+ for many days in the summer, where the 90's start in late April and don't end until October, where a 20 min thunderstorm might blow through once or twice a month in the summer, rarely has water emergencies. The worst I remember it getting is alternate days watering your lawn and thats when we had over 30 days at 100+ a few years ago.

We live on well water in my area and usually August is when the water boy starts delivering to holding tanks but he has started now.

It is a tourist attraction to come storm watch here on the Central Oregon Coast.

I can count the storms on one hand for this year and can only thing of twice that it blew hard enough to get us locals attention.

I love the rain and cloudy weather but this sunny stuff is ok but enough already.

Mexico will transfer enough water to the United States to cover a debt that Texas has claimed that Mexico has owed under a 1944 treaty. That water-sharing pact requires Mexico to send the United States an average of 350,000 acre-feet of water annually from six Rio Grande tributaries. The United States in return must send Mexico 1.5 million acre feet from the Colorado River.

From here.

More water for Texas less for California and the upper Colorado river.

Since this was a treaty with Texas, could they be talking about the Colorado that is in Texas (pronounced Colarada). It is not the same river as the big Colorado. The Texas Colorado is big but not as big.

Just wondering.

With Washington and Montana talking about how dry it is, it may be an interesting fire season...

Here's the current Palmer Drought Index, and it does look like the northern tier (Washington, Idaho Montana) are dry...
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/regional_monitoring/palmer.gif

It's early to start talking how big the season will be, cause that counts on things like if it's too dry there won't be dry lightning to spark fire...but it does have potential....

Has this affected you guys?

It will affect Seattle and Tacoma more. There is no snowpack in the mountains this year. Our ski resorts never opened! That's serious because the city water supplies are reservoirs that are dry with not much snow meltoff coming. Spring rain will not fill them. The emergency for them is real.

We get our water from groundwater, which I think will still get enough rain this spring. Another really dry year and I'd worry that many trees will be too stressed and start to die. It's been on the dry side for a few years in a row, and we've really had little rain this winter...

It's a real thing. I've been expecting Seattle to announce something.

Even though it's from your pretend Governor, at least she's doing something ahead of time.

When Virginia was going through a drought 3-4 years ago (it had been going on for 5+ years), Governor Warner waited until the end of the summer to impose water restrictions.

And IIRC, golf courses were immediately exempted (but I may be misremembering that). I do know we had to close the neighborhood pool early.

More water for Texas less for California and the upper Colorado river.

Mexico was shorting us so bad on water from the Rio Grande tributaries that two summers ago the Rio Grande stopped short of reaching the Gulf of Mexico. You could walk across the river bed and not get even the soles of your feet wet!
