Seattle is the worst place imaginable. I'm depressed here all the time, but was very happy living in Florida, middling happy living in mid-latitude states. Sunshine makes all the differenc in the world. I'm too depressed to move.

Buffalo a B+ ? Well, probably because folks around here don't do anti depressants...they relieve the absolute and utter misery by eating themselves to obesity.

I find New York a cold and strange place with rude people by comparison.

I'm depressed all the time in Seattle, but NYC is one of my happy places. I've never had a bad minute there after 20 - 30 trips. Could be, I'm so happy just to be there that people respond in kind.

I'm very sorry to hear you say that, but it is a common refrain from people who are originally from sunny climes.  There may be help for you, however.  There's no need to resign yourself to living an unhappy life.  Please contact someone here for help:

What do you think is the 'best' city or town in Texas to live in?

Depends on what are you looking for. Educational opportunities? -- Austin. Night Life? -- Austin. Making money? -- Dallas or Houston. Wide open spaces? -- Midland or Amarillo. High School football? -- Odessa. Quiet place to retire? -- San Angelo. Resort town? -- San Antonio. Family friendly? -- Lubbock. Decorative pumpjacks? -- Luling.

they don't stay long enough to become truly clinically depressed and get into the medical treatments for it..

Could be, but it took me less than a year to become truly clinically depressed in Seattle. A friend, born and raised here, told me "get used to it. You have to enjoy depression to enjoy Seattle."

It doesn't hurt to have a view of the New Jersey skyline.

Still another Seattleite on this thread looking for a reason to leave. Doesn't anyone like it here? (Not me, I can't stand it. It's far too depressing, even without a single lib.)

Grackles....LOL. We got em here too, along with red-winged blackbirds, and the really annoying Canada Goose.

I lived in Lubbock twenty years ago but go back there every few months. I still like what I see there but the town is growing by leaps and bounds, especially on the newer southwestern side. I always called it the "southwestern bulge." If you ever get a chance, check out Lake Ransom Canyon southeast of Lubbock. It's sort of like a beautiful "crack" in a pool table top. Only those who have been to Lubbock will understand this.

Depends on what are you looking for.....

1. Sane people (Conservative Republicans, of course)

2.  Pretty, single ladies (as mentioned by bettyb in post #8)

3. highspeed internet

4. Temperatures that aren't TOO extreme

5.  Enough of a population so that there is at least a bit of mayhem (sorry, I work in emergency services and it's my bread and butter)

6.  A place where I can buy a reasonably nice house with a few rooms and a big yard for less than a quarter million dollars.

I'm depressed all the time in Seattle,

Isn't Seattle overcast and rainy most of the time?

but NYC is one of my happy places. I've never had a bad minute there after 20 - 30 trips. Could be, I'm so happy just to be there that people respond in kind.

Could be! And just maybe you know the right places to go and things to do in NYC?

I was surprised to see so many FLorida cities with low ratings on the happiness scale. I think the reason is that older people are often diagnosed as clinically depressed when they are merely lonely and rather frightened. So a city with a much older than average population would rank lower than expected, based on consumption of psychotropic drugs.

My mother was in a nursing home for years (in CA), and I know for a fact that the staff was keeping everyone slightly buzzed, maybe just to keep them quiet and easy to manage.

I lived in FL for five years and found that people living in retirement areas tended to drink bigtime, because they were depressed and also adding to their depression. I had the busiest job of my life there, was extremely happy, but without work one enjoys, who knows what happens to the mind? Little widows with lovely homes in FL are essentially dropped off there by their adult kids, thinking mom will be happy. But really, mom would rather stay where her kids and grandkids are.

Summing up: St. Pete and other FL cities are a blast as long as you're working and/or living a busy, involved life, which you can do at any age if you try. But it's easy to slide down the mood scale when you're lonely and bored.
