We came as a family. The Sodomites were out in great numbers.

Yes. That could be "gross" for a family. Nobody wants their kids exposed to that.

>Don't know about clinical depression, when we lost out job and had to sell a house at half what we paid for it (Austin '89) it was quite depressing for everyone. <<

I sold my house in Lubbock at a slight loss in 1986 as well.

>>Otherwise New Mexico (where they also dance al lot) would be higher.<<

Haven't been two-stepping in a while but it was in Albuquerque.

Yes, I think this list has little credibility. It really has to do with the individual and their experiences. I personally would rate New Orleans at the bottom of the list but most people look at me strangely when I tell them this. One man's unbearable humid heat is another man's tropical paradise. Go figure.

Sorry to bend your ear but you seem to be an addition that conservative west Texans could welcome.

No apologies necessary; I appreciate your insights very much and am now convinced that I MUST at least visit Lubbock one day, as well as other parts of Texas.  It's I who must apologize for the long delay in my reply....I wanted you to know that the time you spent typing your gracious and informative post was not wasted  :-)

One of several posts in another thread which may bring a smile:

I was standing on a street corner in Ft. Worth once when a guy behind me made a wolf whistle at a really attractive woman across the street. Being from the north, I was scared that she would think that I did it and make some nasty remark. Instead when we were crossing the street she looked at him and said "Thank you, Sugar". God Blessed Texas.

`Visionary' plan would put `a roof over every bed in King County' by 2014 (Seattle hasn't learned)

"sigh" just being around SANE people, and particularly Ladies who don't always have a huge militant-feminist chip on their shoulder would be SUCH a Blessing  "sigh"

It's very inexpensive to buy a home down here, salaries are on par with other areas of the country (but no state income tax, yeah!), we have shopper's paradise and beautiful sunsets. Warning, though,we also have tornado season and folks are openly religious. If either of these bothers you, it's better to stay put

Thanks very much for your perspectives, they're very much appreciated  :-)

I will definitely 'at least' visit Texas one day, and I apologize for the delay in my reply

Dear Stoat,

Texas has the most beautiful and gracious women in the world. I should know as I married one 32 years ago. Take care and best of luck.
