Opinion: Apple -- Here to Stay
MacCentral ^ | March 08, 2005 | Don Tennant

Nearly a decade ago, just a few months after Microsoft shipped Windows 95, I asked Bill Gates if it was a conscious decision in the development of that product to give Windows more of a Mac look and feel. Of course I knew he'd say it wasn't, but I couldn't resist asking. "There was no goal even to compete with Macintosh," Gates proclaimed. "We don't even think of Macintosh as a competitor."

That was a crock, so I pressed the issue a little. I asked him how he accounted for the widespread perception that Windows 95 looked a lot like Mac 88, and whether the similarity was just a coincidence. I didn't expect a sobbing confession of mimicry, but I thought it would be cool to see how he'd respond. Surprisingly enough, Gates shifted gears and became more forthcoming.

I see you have decided to start spewing personal insults - how unoriginal. Guess you ran out of intellectual ammunition.

Excuse me... That was not a personal insult. Ignorance is curable... but you keep spouting ignorant and incorrect information despite the number of people who point out that YOU ARE WRONG and providing the correct information. No matter how many times they present this correct information, you will again spout the incorrect and clearly false or completely outdated information.

Since you have now been educated about this subject, and are no longer "ignorant" on the subject, I can only conclude that the second option is correct: "You like spreading false information."

Are you ignorant of the fact that this voids the warranty? Are you ignorant of the fact Apple clearly states the Ipod is not designed to be opened by the user?

No. Dog, I am aware that Apple has a warranty that will replace a battery if it fails in the warranty period, I am also aware that although Apple has stated that the iPod was not designed to be opened by users, it is not impossible, and even provides instructions on how to do it, All of the above makes me informed of the facts and, hence, not ignorant.

It is YOU who choose to ignore the facts as presented by almost every iPod user on this thread and to continue to spout "facts" that they clearly know are wrong... and that makes you ignorant or deliberate in your spreading of false information.

The idea was first envisioned by Vanaver Bush in the 40s, extended by Douglas Engelbart (inventor of the mouse) in the 50s and 60s, and most of his engineers went on to work at Xerox PARC to continue it more, where they developed the Alto and Star.

You mean it REALLY IS BUSH'S FAULT???????????

Swordmaker, I think you are the only one that is using ad hominem attacks. Remember this one:

Swordmaker: Are you truly as ignorant as you appear

The MacCrybaby's are the ones throwing the rocks and spewing personal insults.

Although I have already addressed this, I shall again. Stating that someone appears ignorant is not a slur... ignorance is curable. I then provided you with the correct information to cure your problem.

On the other hand the term "MacCrybaby" is definately a slur... and a general one at that, attacking anyone who disagrees with your exalted opinion of the Macintosh. That IS ad hominem argument and a fallacy.

You know, Dog, when you find yourself in a hole with no way out, it is generally best to stop digging... Admit you really did not know what you were talking about and that your information was second hand and completely outdated.

Sorry. I have owned a Mac (I still own one - an old one). . . . one-computer, one-company, one-fuhrer 1984 model they totally lost me (and market share).

Whow... you base your opinions on your experiences with a 21 year old computer.

I guess I should just base my opinions on my experience with a similar vintage Microsoft product... let's see... that would be DOS... I'll fudge a little and go Widnows 1.0... It sucks.

In case you haven't noticed, the world has moved on in the last 21 years... and that includes the Macintosh.

Sword it's clear he's not going to be dissuaded from his belief that anyone who uses a Mac is gay (I guess he would have to lump President Bush into that category). I tried to have a civil discourse with him, and gave up. May you have better luck than I had.

Such bitterness.

I actually didn't like OS/2 much. But you miss the point entirely, which is that the MS schills apply one set of logic to Apple products, but fail to use that same logic when applied to their beloved Windows. Your arguments when compared fall apart.

I didn't say "difficult". I said "more difficult".

Sorry, rephrase, "I doubt it if they're more difficult for you to administer."

Software availability for the Mac is crap.

At the chain stores only. There's loads -- enough to do everything I need -- online and at Apple stores.

I can. WTF do you shop -- the 'hood?

I guess so. I can't seem to find a copy of Maya, SPSS or Oracle 10g either, so I guess they're crap since the chains don't stock them. Or maybe the reality is that chains don't stock stuff that moves such low volume.

Reread the article, fanboy. From your source:

You'll also notice that Apple hasn't released numbers yet. This was based on an analyst's survey of PC-owning iPod users.

"Soon, real soon, linux will be a big competitor to Windows."

It isn't far away now. Some Freeper turned me on to the Knoppix CD Linux boot. It comes right up and works like a charm, so the install problem is solvable. KDE is very usable, I consider it about win98 level but with security and stable, which wasn't that bad.

I'm not saying Linux beats windows, I'm justy saying it isn't bad now and time is on its side.

The operative word being "loads". As in piles.

Don't be asinine. We're talking about broadly used desktop apps, not that load of specialized crap.

Irrelevant. Any assertion by you or anybody else that Apple has picked up desktop users from iPod sales -- is not supportable by objective fact. So answer the question: Where do you get your dope? It would explain a lot...

B2000, you don't know me, you don't know my heart. All you know is your own ego. I've reviewed some of your recent posts, and they make up a sad history of lashing out and trying to raise yourself up by putting others down. I pray for you to find happiness soon, because in this place I've seen only bitterness and rage from you. Do not bother trying to goad me any more. It is better for both of us if I don't reinforce your behavior by responding.

The man who was behind the pc effort was Philip "Don" Estridge.

I did not say that Don Estridge got fired... I said the "management of the Boca Raton typewriter" division got fired... the people who gave Don the low budget.

I got this story from somone in the Senior Management of IBM at the time it happened. The computer division was making a lot of waves because it was left out of the loop in the development of the PC. It was also reported in the computer press at the time. IBM even considered shelving the product under pressure from the computer division (at that time the computer division meant very big, expensive computers... not desk top computers) but sales started to boom.
