there was a front page article in the Houston Chronicle today

Yeh, I read that article on another thread here today. I was ready to barf also. I think he was saying he and his wife were struggling on $90.00 a week and he was doing sports play by play to make extra money. He should have stayed in sports announcing. I can hear it now.... Rather: "Maybe it isn't true that that pitcher lost the game, but the essence of his performance was victorious." ;-)

"We make fun of Trump, and he laughs all the way to the bank. I doubt whether he cares if anyone likes him or not. He is secure in who he is."

I agree. I have come to the conclusion that there are too many Freepers who will attack just about anyone, friend or foe. Perhaps in Trump's case, it's jealousy. He's done real well in life, and perhaps some Freepers wish they would have done half as well. A little class envy perhaps? Same kind of attacks have been made on the Martha Stewart threads, and the Charles and Camilla threads. People who don't know them from an Adam's apple, who have never had anything done to them by these famous people, vent their spleens and badmouth them a lot. All I can think is jealousy, the same class envy that we accuse Dems of being guilty of. I thank Trump for saying something negative about Dan Rather, our known enemy. Trump is not a known enemy, and should be left alone, even if he does need a new hairstyle.

The real estate tycoon did admit that he has some personal animus against the retiring newsman.

"He did a report on me that was basically dishonest," Trump told Foxman Chris Wallace "So since then, I don't deal with him."

Media Research Center:
Dan Rather on Bill Clinton:
"I think he’s an honest man."

O’Reilly: "I want to ask you flat out, do you think President Clinton’s an honest man?"
Rather: "Yes, I think he’s an honest man."
    O’Reilly: "Do you, really?"
    Rather: "I do."
O’Reilly: "Even though he lied to Jim Lehrer’s face about the Lewinsky case?"
Rather: "Who among us has not lied about something?"
O’Reilly: "Well, I didn’t lie to anybody’s face on national television. I don’t think you have, have you?"
Rather: "I don’t think I ever have. I hope I never have. But, look, it’s one thing-"
O’Reilly, jumping in: "How can you say he’s an honest guy then?"
Rather: "Well, because I think he is. I think at core he’s an honest person. I know that you have a different view. I know that you consider it sort of astonishing anybody would say so, but I think you can be an honest person and lie about any number of things."
    O’Reilly: "Really?!?"
    Rather: "Yeah, I do."
    O’Reilly: "See, I can’t. I want my government to be honest across-the-board. I don’t want people lying."

Big deal. For a high enough ratings share Trump will fire anyone.

Yes, you are missing something. Two things, The Apprentice, and the use of the term "patent" in a non-dictionary-definition way.

Trust me, in pop culture right now, Donald Trump *owns* "You're Fired!" (with appropriate finger pointing motion).

Weren't you just hoping against hope that a hugh bunkah bustah came bustin through the roof of Saddam's palace as Dan interviewed gave him aid and comfort just before our troops invaded?

(Talk about missed opportunities.)

Thanks. I don't doubt he owns the use of the what-ever-it-is phrase, "You're fired." The Italics following my post (#5) are taken from the government agency which registers patents. Whatever Trump owns, it does not fit the Patent Office definition as to what may be granted as a patent.

He probably registered the phrase as a Trademark: "A trademark is a word, name, symbol, or device that is used in trade with goods to indicate the source of the goods and to distinguish them from the goods of others. A servicemark is the same as a trademark except that it identifies and distinguishes the source of a service rather than a product. The terms “trademark” and “mark” are commonly used to refer to both trademarks and servicemarks.

"Trademark rights may be used to prevent others from using a confusingly similar mark, but not to prevent others from making the same goods or from selling the same goods or services under a clearly different mark. Trademarks which are used in interstate or foreign commerce may be registered with the USPTO."

From the same government website as referenced in #5

I think you're taking this *far* too literally. Did you miss "the use of the term "patent" in a non-dictionary-definition way" from my previous post.

I think he has neither trademarked nor patented it. If he has, IP law has gone crazy.

I love it when the vagaries of text messaging start to work themselves out . :-) . .

You must have missed the controversy and the ensuing discussion back when the phrase, "You're fired!" first became so popular.  There was considerable talk, some of it attributed to Trump, that he was seeking to copyright or trademark the phrase . . . thus owning it.

Then, when Newsmax included this as the lead in their story: Megabucks real estate mogul Donald Trump, whose patented phrase,"You're Fired," has become the centerpiece of NBC's hit show "The Apprentice," . . . I wrote my comments.

So . . .

I think you're taking this *far* too literally. Did you miss "the use of the term "patent" in a non-dictionary-definition way" from my previous post.

I did not miss it.  I may not have understood your meaning, and may not understand it still.  How about the frame of reference and context I provided at the start of this post?  Does that explain why I took the Newsmax sentence literally and commented as I did?  :-)

Ah, didn't realize Trump was really trying to do that.

Trump trying to pull something like that, does not surprise me one bit. If he's managed to actually get a trademark or patent, then I stand by my previous comment, that IP law has gone crazy.
