Civil Rights Kin: Dean Should Resign
NewsMax ^ | 3/5/05 | Carl Limbacher

The brother of civil rights icon Medgar Evers is calling on Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean to resign for suggesting that minorities generally work in professions like maids and bellboys.

Speaking at Mississippi's Jackson State University College last week, Charles Evers said: "The Democratic Party [should] do the same thing to Dean that Republicans and other Democrats did to Senator Lott. Ask him to step down, because he's the wrong man for the position." Evers was reacting to Dean's comments last month to the Congressional Black Caucus, where he joked: "You think the Republican National Committee could get this many people of color in a single room? Only if they had hotel staff in here."

Evers, a member of the Mississippi Republican Executive Committee, elaborated on his call for Dean's resignation on Thursday.

"As a black man, I resent anyone who says anything about us as a race," he told Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes." "When are we going to learn to become Americans? When are we going to learn to respect Republicans and Democrats as human beings and not as black or white?"

Evers' brother Medgar became the civil rights movement's first martyr after he was assassinated in 1963 while working as the NAACP's first field coordinator in Mississippi.

Having the Screecher as DNC chairman is one of the best things that has ever happened to the GOP.

A chastened and repentant Dean offers to share his lunch with Evers, by way of apology:

Are the Rats still stashing him in the attic like some crazy uncle who puts lampshades on his head at parties, so you coop him up to avoid embarassment?

Dean is just helping the Democrats get in touch with their historically racist roots.

This piece of low class Democrat "Traitor" vermin (Howard Dean) will not even appear on TV network or cable news/talk shows. The Democrats are keeping this malcontent misfit in the closet!!! They are ashamed of him, and frightened of what will come out of his mouth!!!

Get rid of Dean, ... Nah, putting Dean in such a position is one of the better decissions those DUmies have made to make sure that they keep on digging their own hole.

I'd have to agree. Charles Evers is a good guy and an icon of the days when the civil rights stuggle was a good cause to acheive equal opportunity rather than to race bait. Dean is the perfect icon for what the Democrat party has become.

In 2000, it was "we wuz robbed in Florida." In 2004, it was "we wuz robbed in Ohio." Until the party suffers a lopsided defeat along the lines of McGovern in 1972, they will continue to cling to the hope that the American people support their message, they just haven't found the right way to present it.

It would seem to me that Mr Evers would demand that Sen Byrd resign before asking for Dean to step down? Byrd's past is far worse, IMHO, than Dean's.......

It's almost funny, to the point of being ludicrous, that Lott lost his Sen Maj post for being kind to an aged man who once supported segregation while a senator, who was a kleagle with the KKK, still holds his seat in the Senate?

To play Devil's Advocate here, I think what Dean was trying to say is that the only position the GOP would allow blacks to be in is the hired help.

Of course I'm not crying that he's coming off looking like the loon he is.

Indeed it is. I cannot fathom why the DNC was did not triangulate back to the DLC for leadership, but I am certainly happy at their bold move to the left under the amazing guidance of Governor Dean.

In fact, it downright tickles me that they have made the most progressive move possible short of nominating Mayor Dennis Kucinich or the Reverend Jesse Jackson.

uh duh, calling Condi Rice, Doctor Rice as Sec of State is a fine example of GOP progressive politics.

Dean's comment reflects the view of R. Byrd and the demofrantic party
