A Methuen fourth-grader who was attending school as a girl before February break has come back to school as a boy.
The parents of the 9-year-old said their child was born with the body of a girl but the brain of a boy and has struggled with identity from an early age.
The unidentified parents are now asking school officials to instruct teachers and students to refer to the child as a boy and begin using a new name to address him. The student has been attending the elementary school since first grade.
The sudden change in the child's sexual identity has generated some concerned calls to the school, but administrators said they intend to comply with the parents' request, according to the Eagle-Tribune of Lawrence.
There are about 1,200 students in the elementary school, with nearly 150 in fourth grade. So far, school officials said, students are adjusting well to the change.
The mother of the child said the decision to change the child's identity came after lengthy consultations with medical professionals. She said the child's condition is the result of a birth defect that causes the body to develop as one gender, while the brain is hardwired for another.
The mother said the child began identifying as a boy at an early age and became so insistant that she and her husband sought medical help. The child has not undergone any medical procedure to change sexes.
It IS a normal occurence. These parents should have this child taken away from them..this is child abuse..messing with the poor girl's mind when she's just being a normal tomboy type.. any other explanation is pure BS... what these parents are doing is disgusting.

Since the parents decided to do this, I think they should have sent their child to another school where her history as a girl wasn't known. Why subject all the other children to this? The other children didn't need lessons about this in elementary school. Those parents weren't given a choice.

The research was carried out be dissecting the hypothalamus of deceased transsexual individuals, and controls of 'normal' men and women. Microtrome samples of the BSTC region of the hypothalamus were stained and then microscopically compared.
The researchers noted that the BSTC region of men and women were markedly different in size. They also noted that the BSTC region of male to female transexuals were within the range that was expected for women, and statistically different from that of men, tested at the p=0.005 level. That means there was less than 1/2 percent chance the mean for transexual BSTC regions to have a mean size with in the distribuition for men.
Researchers also compared the BSTC of a man, who had been treated for prostate with androgen blockers and estrogens. The BSTC for this individual was with in the normal size range for men. This is good evidence that adult adminstration of androgen blockers or estrogens does not produce the difference in BSTC structure.
They also noted that the BSTC for lesbians and female to male transexuals was much closer to the normal range for men than for women.
This is certainly suggestive of a biological process. I will add, more research needs to be done, to test for repeatability.

The record of psychotherapy, for reversing gender identity problems, is about a 99% failure rate.
Not that it would be remotely ethical to do the test, but I wonder how males forced to act like females would compare. There is to some extent a variance in the growth of various areas based upon consistant behaviour. Like a muscle, certain nerve bundles grow with use.
If true, what does it say about Gay/Lesbian - I tend to think it is more behavioral than biological and, perhaps, the cause and effect is reversed. Meaning the changes in BSTC that were observed were the RESULT of something else, not the apparent cause. Time will tell.

Some children were destroyed when their parents changed their gender before they were old enough to know whether they themselves were more girl than boy or vice-versa. I'm glad they're waiting for the child to add on a few years before undertaking such a life changing operation.
That isn't what it's about. They were born with both male and female genitalia. Only as they grow older do they what sex they are. Male or female. It's a genetic disorder.
