WAR ON TERROR Has Osama given up? Geopolitical expert: Message to Zarqawi amounts to surrender

Osama bin Laden's recent message to colleague Abu Musab al-Zarqawi asking him to launch attacks on U.S. soil represents the surrender of the terror leader, says a leading geopolitical expert.

In a column on his intelligence website, To the Point, Dr. Jack Wheeler says the war on terrorism may have been won on March 1, when U.S. intelligence announced it had intercepted bin Laden's message to the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Sure...

A guy who has dedicated his entire life to taking down first the Soviet Union and now the United States and has had to live in a cave to survive while doing it is just going to give up.

I bet WorldNUTDaily believes it, but I don't for a second.

I have been wondering if the intercept was a setup designed to rattle the markets and strike fear into the hearts of Americans?

Personally, I think they have settled in for the long haul. At least, Z appears to be sitting on his azz and stuffing his face.

thats about the way I read it too.

Maybe Bin Laden realizes hes pinned in. maybe its just for show? Who knows, but I seriously doubt hes giving up.

I'm inclined to agree with you. However, there were those reports that Osama's Arab Legion really didn't engage in a whole heckuva lot of combat against the Russians in Afghanistan. They mostly just took the training and sucked up the money (from the Saudis & Pakis) and made a few perfunctory forays into the 'Stan just to make it 'look good'.

I don't know what to make of the validity of those reports, personally.

I also keep thinking that it must be galling to them all, including Soros and the donks, to have spent all this time, money, lives and the result is that the US economy is doing well, market went up in triple digits yesterday ,W's popularity is high, the Iraqis voted, the Lebanese are staging a revolution, Pali forces are confronting the terrorists there, the Euros are writing articles about maybe Bush was right...etc.

Maybe they haven't *given up*, but they sure as he!! haven't been successful, in the long run. You can never rule out the fabled Arab braggadocio, either.

Ping.

Even if Wheeler's general interpretation is right, I'm not so sure it means that bin Laden is giving up, just that he is losing.

probably....and when the USSR collapsed it was kinda logical they came after us next I guess.

I doubt Bin Laden is stupid and therefore I think he probably knows he's in trouble. But all leaders delegate at some point and he falls under the definition of a leader albeit an evil one.

yeah...

bragga-whatever is a definite part of it. But if you or I were as committed to something as this nutzo is to taking the US down, would you quit? I can't say I would, but then again I know I wont start living in a cave either. :)

I still am not convinced Bin Laden is alive.
That last tape of his sounded really phony
and weird.
For example
he seemed to know details about the 'Goat Story'
that did not even appear in the US press.
It seemed to be an odd topic
to be studying
up in the mountains of Waziristan
(or wherever).
(Mark Steyn had a column about that at the time)

assuming this news is true, that an actual message was sent to Zarqawi by Bin Laden to take over US terrorist operations, it does signal the following:

Bin Laden now figures Iraq is a lost cause or why else encourage your most productive terrorist envoy to leave, [and that was in fact inherent in the last intercepted message, even Zarqawi knew that attacking Iraqis once they took over wasn't going to play well....not that he has stopped yet...because frankly Zarqawi in Iraq has done more to damage Al Queda than anything the US could have done, because more and more Muslims see Al Queda for the monsters they truly are]

it is especially odd since Bin Laden allegedly made a big production of naming Zarqawi his man in Iraq just a few months ago....

and/or that the leadership ranks are pretty thin and unproductive if the only option for Bin Laden is to take Zarqawi out of Iraq (because usually Binny likes to fight on many fronts)

oh I've read and heard that too, by more than one source

what I heard was that the Pakistani ISI was divying out the money unfairly, they were giving the Holy Warrior money to the most Islamist dudes, like Hetmakyar, now Hetmakyar is notorious for having done little fighting but just pocketing the money and keeping the weapons for the civil war he knew was coming up.....Hetmakyar being a good buddy of old Osama there....

and they say that Massoud, the Northern Alliance commander, who was a more moderate Muslim, was getting the short end of the stick and yet it was Massoud's crew that had the biggest victories against the Russians.....even the Pashtuns hailed Massoud as a war hero when he was assassinated....

it is established fact that the Holy Warriors weren't getting very far until the Americans outfitted them with Stinger missiles and it was the constant downing of Russian helicopters that turned the tide.....Bin Laden never likes to mention that though....

the CIA guy in charge acknowledges now that it had been a mistake to let the Pakistani ISI divy out the money, I wouldn't be surprised that the ISI also kept a lot of the Saudi and CIA money to fund the Taliban later....

The goat story, and other references, came from Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore. It was released in Iran months before, certainly elsewhere.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1187016/posts

I remember the stories from Iran and Europe about the audience. They thought they'd see something they like, but didn't. For example, Moore's racist portrayal of the "coalition of the willing" countries, and ignoring of Britain, Italy, etc.

Moore also had an appearance in a Bali bombing trial, a defendant's lawyer reading parts of one of his books to rationalize the attack. No kidding.

I think Bin Laden is stuck between a rock and a hard place right now.Osama has been able to avoid being killed or captured with the help of officials in Pakistan who know exactly where he is.They are willing to provide cover for him as long as he doesn't commit any large acts of terror. If he attacks America on the scale of 9/11 he will lose any assistance and either be killed or turned over to the US.I think this is the reason why he has been trying to outsource attacks to others and allowing lower level terrorist to do whatever damage they can.He has been talking a lot about killing infidels but for some reason he hasn't been too active since 9/11.Is there any doubt whether he would attack us if he could?
