WASHINGTON -- In late December, police in South Jersey moved in to arrest a local drug dealer and made an unsettling discovery in his car. Besides more than a kilo of crack cocaine, they found a new type of handgun that was capable of piercing police body armor, according to Camden County Prosecutor Vincent Sarubbi.
The weapon, called the Five-seveN by its Belgian manufacturer, FN Herstal, began showing up on U.S. streets last fall, according to law enforcement officials. The gun is now itself a target - of legislation introduced yesterday by four lawmakers from New York and New Jersey that would ban it from the United States. The sponsors are Rep. Eliot Engel (D-Bronx), Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Jon Corzine, both New Jersey Democrats.

"However, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a gun control group, said one of its staffers bought a Five-seveN from a gun dealer in Virginia in January for about $1,000. "One happy staffer!

Just about every deer rifle sold at K-Mart will do a dandy job of piercing body armor. Saw off the barrel with a hacksaw and you've got a reasonably concealable weapon.

a new type of handgun that was capable of piercing police body armor What, do you have to throw the gun really hard at the body armor?
Maybe it has sharp edges and points on it or something.

Ya can't win. Anti-personal defense types decry .38 snubbies as "junk" and should be banned. Large diameter ammo as "too large" and hollow points as "too lethal." Even FMJ ammo is seen as dangerous as multiple hits may be needed to bring an attacker down. Scopes are only used by snipers. Black guns are assault weapons. Non-assualt weapon are just "skirting" the laws...on and on.

What a lieing bunch. Most any hand gun load with the right bullet at the right velocity can be made to go through body armor.
Most hand guns with the powder capaticty and a hard light weight bullet will do it.

From the link you provided:
"The Five-seveN® fires the SS190 5.7x28mm ball round. This projectile will perforate any individual protection on today's battlefield including the PASGT kevlar helmet, 48 layers of kevlar body armor and the CRISAT target (titanium and kevlar). The SS190's conventional design allows it to be manufactured on existing production lines, and its lead-free composition eliminates range contamination."
Yeah ... we wouldn't want to contaminate the earth while we are ridding it of evil doers.
I think I need a few of these for "keepsakes". ;)

If I was a democrat and ran around trying to stop any changes to Social Security I would start now to get all weapons out of the hands of the soon to be pissed off public.

Cool. I wondered when they were going to make a jump to ultra HV ammo with necked cases in handguns. No mention of velocity though...any idea?
