Big Jump In Gas Prices Predicted [24 cents!]
CBS News ^ | 3/3/2005 | CBS/AP

Gasoline prices are about to go through the moon roof. One analyst predicts a 24-cent-a-gallon increase in the next few days and other experts say average prices could go as high as $2.50 a gallon this summer, the peak driving season.

"$2 a gallon we think is easily within reach and probably in the next couple of months," the American Automobile Association's Robert Sinclair told CBS Radio News.

Tom Kloza, senior analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, expects the jump much sooner: The end of this month. "Petronoia is in full flower," he told USA Today, but added he's not sure if prices will stay over $2 a gallon, or retreat as they did last fall.

Fuel-watchers say the main culprit is global demand, which briefly pushed the price of a gallon of crude oil as high as $55 a barrel Thursday. That's the highest level since last October.

As someone who earns a living using his car all day, I guess it's ankle-grabbing time.

Tell me again when Smart cars are going to get here?

Let's all thank the liberals who prevent us from drilling off of California and in ANWAR. Yet watch them complain about high gas prices this summer. You can't have it both ways my friends.

What difference does it make if the majority of drivers choose to drive big trucks? You might get slightly better mileage, but it won't impact the demand unless others buy it too.

I drive 30,000 miles a year.

I asked a Democrat acquaintance the other day where OUR oil was...you know, the oil that Bush went into Iraq for? I figure that if that's really why we went there then why the HELL is gas so damn expensive???

He couldn't give a coherent answer.

Dude, do your homework.

We went to Iraq for oil, but we didn't have a plan once we got there, or an exit strategy.

I really doubt ANWAR would have made a difference. I don't think that one small reserve is expected to offset the rising global demand. As more nations develop and join the world economy, the demand will continue to go up and up.

I actually would like to own the new Ford Escape Hybrid; I really dig the hybrid cars out there now.

The problem is that my Pontiac Aztek cost 14,000 dollars, and the Ford Escape Hybrid costs $26,500 bare naked.

As much as I'd like to own a hybrid vehicle (especially an SUV) here in the midwest, I can't afford to pay double or more for a car just because it's a hybrid.

If he wanted to follow demo-conspiracy, he'd say that the Bushies created the higher oil prices by invading iraq so they could make more profits.higher oil price=more profits.

I'm not worried about impacting demand, but I'd like the opportunity to cut my personal gas expenses in half.

When lefties figure out how to rewrite the laws of thermodynamics and enforce the new version.

In the meantime, the royalty checks, they do roll in.

Drilling in ANWAR would make barely a dent in oil prices.

They've had those out for years. They are called Fords and they have the uncanny ability to coordinate their breakdown with payday.

I really doubt ANWAR would have made a difference.

Ten years at current US consumption gives us time to react.

They are here. Unfortunately, after testing by the EPA, it appears that they actually only get about 36 mpg. The importer has asked for retesting, but it remains to be seen if the EPA is going to do it.

The gas stations in my area didn't wait for the wholesale price to go up. They all just raised the pump price by 25 cents yesterday. Regular unleaded is 2.10 a gallon now.

Maybe this will provide enough push to get alternatives off the ground. We really need to be free of OPECS shackles.

Here's a question: Why is gas the only commodity that goes up whenever there is even specualtion that crude prices will go up, yet it takes FOREVER to go down?

ANWR could provide 3 years at current consumption at the max. We need a energy plan now.
