The troops are fighting over there. Surely, you can give up a day or two of your free time to organize, support, and attend a rally to counter the hate-America first crowd.
HOW: Some suggestions:
Call the local police and ask about requirements for permits, restrictions on protest sign size and materials, and other laws involved in protests. In many locations, no permit is needed if you are going to be under a given number such as 25 people.Plan an event. If possible, try to get a location across the street from the leftists or otherwise close, but not too close, to them. Try to have some barrier such as a street, hedge, or fence between them and your group IF you think it's necessary to control interaction between the groups and the police are unlikely to be deployed in numbers between the groups.
Publicize the event by starting a thread about your local Rally/Counter-protest. Contact other FReepers in your area by pinging them to the thread and using the state message boards. (Click here, then on an appropriate state message board. From there, you can locate some adjacent FReepers by clicking on the "[New Prototype -- Click for Members List].") Contact local veterans' organizations, GOP groups (especially College Republicans), Young Americans for Freedom, and all other groups (e.g., Second Amendment groups) that are likely to support our side.
Send out press releases to local media and contact local talk show hosts, especially conservative ones, who may be willing to promote, attend or speak at the event.
Make sure that all of your people know that the point is not to interfere with anyone else's rights, but to emphasize support for the troops and their mission. Give out or at least publicize rules for protesting such as DC Chapter's rules for protesting, especially if you have a few who might be overly zealous:
No violence, no threats, no profanity, no racism, no law-breaking.Law enforcement officers must be treated with respect.
Stay out of the street at all times, except when using a crosswalk with the traffic light.
Do not block the sidewalk to pedestrian traffic. Keep your signs from hanging over into the street.
Do not block the signs of, nor get within 10 feet of, our opponents. Do not interfere with any media coverage of them. Our First Amendment rights are their rights, too.
Any arguments should be at 10 feet away to avoid conflict arising from passions on both sides. If you choose to get close to them physically, do so in friendship as fellow Americans only.
Do not give the middle finger, call people jerks, tell them to go home or get a job.
Take the high road. Be civil, but resolute, when you are cursed at or given the middle finger; point out the rudeness of the leftists by chanting, "Mean spirited arrogant condescending liberal."
Bring lots of American flags.
Have fun.
WHY: What good does a rally or counter-protest do?
Gets out a message to our troops that we support them.Allows you to peacefully express your point of view. Much better than kicking in your TV when the leftists come on.
Upsets the leftists and demoralizes some of them. Prevents them from getting a free ride in the media.
Example of the last item of upsetting the leftists. In January, the Washington Post actually did a quite fair video report of the battle between the DC Chapter of Free Republic and ANSWER (click here to see that 4 or 5 minute video report of three segments which load sequentially). The leader of ANSWER dismisses our group as parasites, but ANSWER has now cancelled their plans for a anti-war rally or march in DC.
The DC Chapter's persistence in opposing this group of America-haters and stepping on their message has likely caused them to withdraw their DC plans and go elsewhere. ANSWER will probably come back to DC, but they have decided that they can do more harm to our country on this occasion by going outside DC. However, if enough conservatives actually would show up to peacefully counter-protest these leftists, they might withdraw from the country, not just from DC. Or, after sufficiently large conservative counter-protests to the leftists, the media would stop carrying their water and the anti-war movement would, effectively, cease to exist.
*Fayetteville, NC apparently will be the big show this time.
The leftists' major groups, ANSWER, United for Peace and Justice (whose events will be listed a reply post), and Code Pink are really promoting the peace protest in Fayetteville, North Carolina and trying to get their people to that protest. Therefore, if at all possible, attend the counter-protest in Fayetteville (apparently being organized by clyde asbury, TaxRelief, and Huber) as discussed briefly on the below thread:

On the one-year anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq, hundreds gathered in Fayetteville for what some called the city's largest peace rally since the Vietnam War.
Even more people are expected for the second anniversary.
A rally set for March 19 at Rowan Park is being advertised nationally by United for Peace and Justice. On its Web site, the group is promoting a ''major regional protest in Fayetteville, N.C.'' [emphasis added]

For 2 1/2 years, a silent vigil for peace has taken place each week on the West Lawn of the US Capitol. Started by Quakers, this vigil is not a protest, nor a march, but a non-partisan, ecumenical silent vigil, under the simple banner, "Seek Peace and Pursue It", a quote from Psalms 34.

The regional "Midwest Peace Summit" on the campus of IUPUI from March 18 - 20 will culminate in an "End the War in Iraq NOW!" rally on Sunday, March 20, on Indianapolis' Monument Circle. The rally will coincide with the national day of protest sponsored by UFPJ and is sponsored by Students for Peace In Iraq (SPII) and the Indiana Peace & Justice Network. The rally will feature keynoter Michael Parenti and other speakers from peace and justice organizations throughout the region. There will be a regional critical mass bike ride to coincide with the rally.

Drummers in the central time zone will start at 12:00 noon CTZ playing the heartbeat for 15 minutes then freestyle with the heartbeat as the root until 1:15 and so on across the country and then around the world. So its easy, where ever you are in the United States start at noon and play until 1:15pm. For drummers in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Asia, Middle East and Europe It will be noon on March 21st.

All will come together to display the tombstones and honor the dead in Forest Park. The plan is to gather at Art Hill at 4pm. From the memorial/Art Hill, buses will take people carrying the tombstones to sites along St. Louis highways where the tombstones will be displayed for rush hour on Monday morning, March 21.

IRAQ: SPEAKING OF WAR: This ritual-theater event is presented on the eve of the second anniversary of the United States invasion of Iraq, to mourn all those who have died and been wounded in the conflict. Actors tell stories of individuals caught in the war, culled from a wide range of documentary sources, while the chorus names and laments the dead. Musical interludes provide space for reflection. This documentary-ritual reveals the human costs of the Iraq war and memorializes the loss of so many irreplaceable lives.
Even as the official death toll of Americans killed in combat continues to rise (currently over 1,350), there is no count of Iraqi civilian deaths. Estimates range from between 16,000 (Iraq Body Count) to over 100,000 (The Lancet). Many of those killed or maimed by bombs and shrapnel, at checkpoints, or in their homes, have been children. The stories of American soldiers, Iraqi civilians and combatants, journalists and aid workers, when told together, weave a tapestry of shared humanity.

This is intended to be a solemn, respectful tribute to all who have suffered and died in war. The names of the American fallen and as many of the Iraqi children as we can manage will be written on cloth flags (like Tibetan prayer flags) and carried in a continous strand through the Procession route (about a mile). We will lay wreaths at the Veteran's Memorial and at the local armory, which has a shrine for the fallen, and Taps will be played. This will actually be a two day event, with several other peace activities scheduled. There will be a non-violence training just before the Procession. Physicians for Social Responsibility will have speakers on Friday night, March 18, and on Saturday the 19 at 3:00 there will be a counter-recruitment panel. There will also be entertainment and other events.
