Do you think we'll ever hear what kind of prescription he was taking to stay awake and functional sitting down that long?

Technically, in order to be elibgible for the record, you have to land in the same vehicle you went up in. At least as far as the FAA and NASA is concerned. Yuri only landed his capsule.

With Cialis any erections over 4 hours require immediate medical attention. I saw it on the commercial...

Yeah, like that's going to bother most guys! The wife or girlfriend might call for medical attention though!

He said he got no sleep the first two nights, but he took 6 or 7 naps of 1 or 2 minutes on the second 2 nights. (after flight interview)

Yuri Gagarin was the first to fly solo

Technically, he fell. Also, technically, I don't think it counts as a circumnavigation unless you circle a pair of antipodes, else what's to stop someone from flying around the North Pole and then claiming to have "flown around the World"?

You'd think American corps would get on board with this sort of thing...

The company that made the engine is Williams International, a privately owened American company. The man that designed the plane is Burt Ruttan, an American. His company, Scaled Composites, is the one who built Space Ship One and the Global Flyer. And Fossett is nuthin' but All American. The Brit is a long time associate of both men, and has put his life in their very hands on more than one occasion. He couldn't fund something like this in the good ole UK, so he came here.

Oh poo-poo to those who don't applaud this achievement. It is an historic event that will change aviation and commercial flying.

Like most techonological advances, change begins with one courageous, dedicated, driven, and optimistic person. The very types we want more of - yet some here decry his success. Jealousy? Apathy? More interested in watching news of Michael Jackson, perhaps? Or just so pessimistic that they can't find anything to enjoy in life?

I, for one, am so glad to have uplifting news about something that has no political connotations, sex, crime, natural dissaster, or scandal connected with it.

WTG Fossett! You have made my day, and made history for yourself and America.

Thanks for the post.

I kept switching between the Fox & CNN coverage; why are we forced to suffer thru the news babes comparing this to latest Hollywood flying movie (The Aviator) or comparing Steve Fossett, stockbroker, to Martha Stewart, stockbroker? Even Sheppard Smith was wondering if the low fuel probelms were just publicity hype.

These media idiots know all about Michael Jackson, Ben Aflac (walks like a duck....)& whoever, Brad Pitt & Jen, etc., but can't be bothered to do a bit of background reading on this historic event. Why don't the news producers get an aviation expert on for commentary? Tom Poberezny for one, president of the Experimental Aircraft Association, would be a great "color commentator".

This was an awesome feat by the pilot, Fossett, the ground support team, the financial backer, and especially the design team, Burt Rutan & Scaled Composites. Kudos to Rutan & team; first the X-Prize and now their second non-refueled round world record, all within 6 months.

GO USA! Go EAA! Go private enterprise!

BTW The total cost for Rutan's space program was equal to about 5 minutes, 15 seconds of Super Bowl advertizing cost.
About what a Hollywood "A" list star gets per movie.

Yawnnnnn.... Oh look, I've got lint in my navel.

Yep that sums up this record alright! He flew on a tank of gas! Hey! Tonight I'm going to attempt a round trip from home to work and back home again on less than 1/4 tank of gas!

I can't explain why I find that comment so funny (maybe because I'm creeping up there close to his age), but this is one of the funniest things I've read here in a long time.

Not a whole lot of other planes flying around above 45,000 feet. Two to four minute naps were no danger. I'm sure he was well aware of every other aircraft above 40,000 feet anywhere within 2,000 miles.
