FBI has photos of car at ATM (Coptic murder in NJ)

Security video from a Central Avenue bank's drive-through ATM machine has captured images of the car used by a man to steal from the account of the slain Jersey City family of four whose bodies were found bound and gagged in their Heights home in January, officials said.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward Defazio said investigators have been able to determine the make, model and year of the car and are having the images enhanced with the hope of being able to read the license plate number.

"We have ascertained, by surveillance, time and observation, that the vehicle used at the drive-in by a person who was using the ATM card of Mr. Armanious," Defazio said yesterday...

'snip'

"The car is somewhat distinctive. We are working on locating it with the Jersey City Police Department and the FBI."

This is bizarre. Why would they warn the criminals that the car was photographed by releasing this story, but NOT release any information about the car so the public might be able to help track it down?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but this seems to be further evidence of incompetence. They say they are only just now getting around to investigating this withdrawal, and only now trying to enhance the picture to get the license number? Wouldn't they try to ID the car first before announcing it?

I suppose this could be some kind of deliberate disinformation to trap the perps, but I don't see how.

Exactly what I was thinking. Are they getting advice from (former) Chief Moose?

Odds are the vehicle will be a white van.

They certainly are doing some pretty good Chief Moose imitations.

My hope now is that they don't "patsy" some stiff for something done by the bodies they don't want to rile.

This case is my "high profile important" issue because everyone has a protecter but the kind of family who were murdered there.

or maybe Maxwell Smart. "I'm right on top of it, chief."

How long does it take to track an ATM card, anyway? To review the tape? ... added to everything else, I hope this clarifies who's on what side.

Thanks cyn--copy that.

This "investigation" thus far is not very impressive, as far as I can tell.

I hope this is some kind of ruse, and that the detectives are really playing at Columbo, ready to bust the case wide open with some solid evidence and a press conference declaring this the islamc hate crime that it surely is.

I can dream, can't I?

Yeah, I can too, ari, and I think that's exactly what we're doing.

I haven't changed my opinion. I think we'll see the arrest of a patsy.

Well, you got most of your dream. Sorry you must be disappointed they went for the truth rather than "islamic hate crime" but better luck next time. ;-)

BTW, I don't discount the danger of militant Islamicists, but I am afraid of this whole thing where people jump to conclusions and then over and over the alarmists are shown to be wrong. What will we do against a REAL threat, if we jump to conclusions on these? Who will believe the alarm when it rings for real?

What I am sorry about is that the Armanious family was butchered. What I am disappointed about is that the truth has probably been spirited away to Egypt or Yemen long ago. This family was targeted by muslims on the internet and threatened. After the murders, their pictures were posted gleefully with captions that celebrated and cheered their murder and labeled them pigs. Remember? It's kind of hard to pretend that that never happened.
