The country's beef producers were stunned Wednesday by yet another setback as an American judge agreed to postpone the opening of the Canada-U.S. border to Canadian cattle due to continuing fears about mad cow disease."It's a disaster for our industry again," feedlot operator Rick Paskal said from Picture Butte, Alta. "This is a black, black day for the livestock industry in North America." The U.S. Department of Agriculture had planned to reopen the border Monday. No live cattle have crossed for almost 22 months.
The first thing I thought of when I heard Paul Martin say that we had to "consult" him if we are going to shoot down incoming missiles over Canada headed to the United States (after Canada chose not to be a part of Bush's missle defense plans): close border to beef; close border now.
I know this is temporary and unlikely to be come "more permanent," but every day that we twist the screw into the economy of that socialist country is a day that puts a smile on my face.
"This is a black, black day for the livestock industry..."
I can understand that people are being pretty paranoid over this mad cow disease thing, but don't you think Rick's being just a teensy bit melodramatic?
We need nothing in this country that Canadaism produces!
Canada can keep their bad beef.
(PETA - Please eat tasty animals)
the only thing we get from Canada that is worth anything anyways is marijuana and it is illegal. Canada sucks haahahah
An also Life Savers
One of the primary reasons that beef costs $7-10 dollars per pound is the lack of Canadian beef on the US market. They sure are not helping us much with foriegn policy, but we are hurting ourselves by not allowing Canadian beef on US markets.
What an educated post. < /sarc
Too much bitching from Governor and Senator Wannabe Schweitzer.
fyi
My roots are in Canada and I would never go back while they are in this Government will Control speech/thought/action mode!
Can you imagine if we had TSA agents at the Canadian border for this? They'd pull out the horses, goats and ducks for additional pat downs, and let the cattle waltz through, tennies and all.
You won't take our missile defense, we won't take your diseased beef.
Fair is fair.
i don't take any satisfaction in seeing agriculture in canada get hurt. canadian ranchers have lost a lot of money, not to mention in some cases their livelihood.
first, the beef producers are western canadians for the most part, not eastern canadians. the french canadians are in quebec.
until the mad cow incident there was much good will between canadian westerners and american westerners. canadian westerners that i've met are more like americans than canadian easterners.
the canadian west also shares the coal, oil and gas industries common to the american west.
second, i don't think science supports this judges' decision.
third, from the american point of view, the ranchers and dairy farmers who sell their steers, benefit from the absence of canadian beef. it keeps prices higher.
also, the dairy farmers benefit from not having the pregnant 2 year-old heifers coming into the states. these are purchased by dairy start ups who then over produce and drive down the price of milk.
like everything, it's a complicated matter, and there's much that i don't know about it.
BTTT
whadda you think?
(Hey neighbor, while we're chatting...any chance you wanna discuss missile defense, Canadian troops in Iraq or how much of Canada's GNP goes to defense? No? OK, get back to me when it's a good time. Chow, baby.)
