NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. -- Fletcher High School is on "code red" lockdown after police received a 911 call saying that a student in the cafeteria had a hand grenade.
Students were kept in their classrooms and Neptune Beach police are going through the school searching every student, every locker and every backpack for any device.
"At this time all of the police departments -- the JSO, Neptune Beach Police, Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach -- are working together searching all of the students," Vice-Principal Ben Titus said. "We really believe that it's a hoax, but we're taking it very seriously and making sure that we've checked all student to make sure every student is safe."
Channel 4's Jennifer Waugh said that students are being moved to San Pablo Park across the street from the school. Parent can come on 18th Street and check their children out.
School officials said the lockdown began just after 10:30 a.m., after receiving a cell phone call saying a student had a grenade in the cafeteria.
When the handgrenades are outlawed only the military will have handgrenades. Oh wait.
In an unrelated story, this is exam week.
I'm betting they slap on some white medical gloves and search other "places" too. Wouldn't be too surprising.
More reason to homeschool.
Awww geeee, Principal Smith, I thought this was Show and Tell Tuesday.
Yeah, I've been home-schooling for over six months now, and no grenade threats yet.
It's a chocolate easter egg.
BTW, good for you.
I know I'm probably gonna' be labled as some kind of hard-ass, but in my book, if this is real, someone would be looking at a 1-hour detention, at least.
No problem. The teenager with this weapon can kill as many as he/she wants with no fear of retribution. The SCOTUS says so.
Man, you ARE rough!
It was probably just a replica of the Holy Handgrenade somebody made in shop class.
Then again, there is the issue of seperation of church and state so that probably would not have been allowed.
Students were kept in their classrooms while police from four agencies searched every student, every locker and every backpack for any device. A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office bomb-sniffing dog also went through the school without finding any sign of an explosive device.
"At this point it appears to have been a hoax," Principal Helene Kirkpatrick said. "We're grateful for that, and grateful for the fact that all of our kids and staff and so forth are safe."
School officials said the lockdown began about 10:30 a.m. after a caller on a cell phone told police that a student had a grenade in the cafeteria.
"We believe it was the same person, but we received a number of calls," Neptune Beach Police Chief Bill Brant said. "We ... have people tracking him down."
Channel 4's Jennifer Waugh said that as students were cleared, they were moved to San Pablo Park across the street from the school, where parents come and check their children out. Others waited there for their normal buses.
"She was scared to death," parent Jerry Stodberge said of his daughter.
"Any normal parent would worry that something horrible's going to happen," concerned parent Holly Drumley said.
Kirkpatrick said she'll ask for the stiffest penalty possible for whoever did this because a lot of people were scared and almost a whole day of education was lost.
RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!!!!
