Russia: No System Will Stop New Missiles (

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia will develop missiles impervious to any defense, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Tuesday in an apparent allusion the nascent U.S. missile defense system.

A year ago, President Vladimir Putin said Russia could build unrivaled new strategic weapons, and in November he said it is developing a new nuclear missile system unlike any weapon other countries have or could come up with in the near future.

Ivanov suggested the weapons would be based on the mobile version of the Russian Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles and on a new sea-based system, the Bulava, according to Interfax news agency.

"There is not and will not be any defense against these missiles," he said, according to Interfax.

The Topol-M can hit targets more than 6,000 miles away, and has been in silos since 1998, with about 40 on duty now, according to military officials. Military officials have said they plan to begin deploying the mobile version this year.

Ivanov said the missiles would be for defense and not be intended for use against any country, but he added that "Russia is stretched across 10 times zones, we have many neighbors, and not all of them are as predictable as European states," according to Interfax.

In December, Putin encouraged the Defense Ministry to keep up production of new strategic missile systems, a process slowed in the past by a shortage of funds.

"Russia will ... remain a major nuclear power," Ivanov said, according to Interfax. "But we will not bake missiles like pies. Their quantity should be such that it allows for the provision of our own security in any potential development of the international situation."

Russia opposed Washington's withdrawal in 2002 from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in order to deploy a national missile defense shield, saying the 30-year-old U.S.-Soviet pact was a key element of international security.

Russian officials subsequently tempered their criticism. Putin said it was a "mistake" that would hurt global security but not threaten Russia.

The ABM treaty banned missile defense systems on the assumption that the fear of retaliation would prevent each nation from launching a first strike - a strategy known as mutually assured destruction.

The Bush administration has said its prospective missile defense system would be aimed against potential missile threats from nations such as Iraq or North Korea, and would be unable to fend off a massive nuclear strike Russia is capable of launching.

Just a way of saying they're still important.

The little communist midget needs to shut his mouth and sit down before he gets himself in even more hot water.

Anywhere on Earth could be targeted 'within two hours'

American scientists are developing hypersonic cruise missiles that will fly 10 times faster than current rockets, penetrate concrete armouring and could be launched from any site in the world.

The missiles would have a range of 9,000 miles, more than a third of Earth's circumference and be able to reach their targets within two hours. First prototypes are expected to be tested next year, though the missile is not expected to be deployed until the end of the decade.

'If someone is messing with us - or Britain - from far away, we could whack them straight away,' said Preston Carter, an aerospace engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in California.

The new missiles will exploit supersonic combustion ramjet - or scramjet - technology. Nasa engineers will tomorrow attempt to fly a robot X-43A scramjet over the Pacific at speeds around 7,200 mph, 10 times the speed of sound.

The flight will be crucial in demonstrating the feasibility of hypersonic travel. Most media attention has focused on its commercial exploitation for jets that could travel from London to Sydney in two hours. The prime aim is to create hypersonic rockets that would replace current cruise missiles.

'The new missiles could strike pretty much anywhere within a couple of hours,' said Graham Warwick, Americas editor of Flight International . 'Current cruise missile have to be carried on a B52 bomber. That involves planning and takes at least 24 hours. The military want a quick solution, so if they knew bin Laden was sipping coffee at a cafe they could get a bomb on target in two hours.'

Scramjets work on the same principle as all jets, by igniting fuel in compressed air and using the expanding gases to propel the aircraft. Standard turbojets use fans to compress the air: scramjets use a plane's forward motion alone to bring air into the combustion chamber and require an initial boost from a rocket.

The entire aircraft then becomes an enormous scoop that receives air which is compressed and injected - and ignited - with a chemical called silane before hydrogen fuel is added. The feat compares to 'lighting a match in a hurricane', says Nasa.

'We'll see a military application initially as a "bunker buster" that would hit its target and bore into the ground before exploding,' said Carter.'

'We are talking about the ability to strike more cost-effectively. If the US has to deploy troops to the other side of the world, it is expensive. This may keep enemies in check and act as a deterrent.'

So what the hell is this "NEW" weapon that they (the Russians ) claim to Have????

Can they defend against this ONE????

Thank you. Do you know if this is ICBM capable or simply short range ballistic missiles?

In that case the US citizen will need to learn to pray. "God's hand is not short"...

It's nothing more than an update of Kruschev saying, "We will bury you."

To which President Ronald Reagan correctly predicted two decades later:
"The march of freedom and democracy which will leave Marxism-Leninism on the ash heap of history as it has left other tyrannies which stifle the freedom and muzzle the self-expression of the people."

I believe that was a successful flight!!!

Anyone have or want to create a BMD (ballistic missile defense) ping list? I'd like to be on it.

It hit a target outside the atmosphere - it is ICBM capable. However, it's not that great against SRBM's.

Yes. There's much more, of course. Chavez is preparing a commie to cause trouble again in Nicaragua, for one. I'll put the diagram in an image, and we'll develop it from there.

and on a new sea-based system, the Bulava

I always thought the Bulova was a decent watch, but don't remember any being waterproof.

Well I'm not worried about SRBMs hitting the U.S.! That's what THAAD is for.

In the most recent known test, the Navy hit an inert warhead outside the atmosphere and during descent. That and the land based program are doing really well, given enough production.

The system is layered, with some layers mostly posted. Several other countries are participating and posting lower level missile defense layers (much recent public news on that).

Also, development is ongoing for quicker offensive systems. There are yet other defensive systems in development that are apparently class'd. Notice, also, that the FAS site hasn't been appreciably updating aircraft publications for quite some time. ...same with other sites like that.

Sorry Boris, this doesn't wash.

This comes form the country whose best car is a FIAT CLONE!!!

Where you have to wait in line for four hours for a loaf of moldy bread.

Where you have to be on a list for 5 years to get a 1950's style washing machine that breaks the first time you use it.

Or did you mean the "other Russia"?

You know, the one that built all of those great gunnery range targets for our M-1 Abrahms tanks.

Yeah, what do you call them?

Oh, now I remember, T-72's, BMP's, BRDM's, PT-76's ....etc.

Russia is imploding, and getting there fast.

They have some very smart scientists, but most of the cream of the crop are now working at our national labs.

Their problem has never been hard science. They are very good at that.

They can design, but when it comes down to advanced materials, manufacturing, quality control (shto eto znachit, kontrol kachestva? [inside joke]), frankly, they suck.

Their entire society, from top to bottom, has been so corrupt for so long, that they can't build anything worth a sh** (except AK's, and even the Czechs, Poles, and Yugos made better examples of those).

When everyone takes their cut, pretty soon there's nothing left but sand and water in the concrete.

I had a Russian woman working for me who refused to shop at Wal-Mart because there were so many choices her brain would freeze up. She couldn't understand how we were able to select from 50 different kinds of bread.

All of our Russian visitors were offered opera, theater, cultural events, etc. Invariably, they chose Wal-Mart and Payless shoes ("we can get opera and that other sh** at home, take us shopping").

Fear not, let them think their "missile shield" is invincible. But we know better.
