Chiles Drops Out of Florida Governor Race

Tuesday March 1, 2005 7:31 PM

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The son and namesake of former Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles Jr. dropped out of the 2006 governor's race Tuesday because does not meet the state's residency requirement.

Lawton ``Bud'' Chiles III, 51, said had not been aware the constitution requires a gubernatorial candidate to live in the state for the seven years before the election. He had announced his candidacy in January.

``I'm clearly a Floridian. Me and my family are Floridians and always have been and always will be. Yet there's this pesky little constitution and it says what it says,'' Chiles said in a speech to the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans.

Chiles, a Democrat, moved back to Florida two years ago after living in the Northeast for about a decade. He previously lived in Tallahassee, where he ran a communications company.

Chiles had been planning a walk through Florida later this month, 35 years after his father took a thousand-mile walk from Pensacola to the Florida Keys in his successful campaign for the U.S. Senate. Lawton Chiles Jr. served 18 years in the Senate, then was governor from 1991 until his death in 1998.

Gov. Jeb Bush can't seek re-election in 2006 because of term limits.

State Sen. Rod Smith and U.S. Rep. Jim Davis have already announced they will seek the Democratic nomination for governor. Other Democrats contemplating a run include state Democratic chairman Scott Maddox and former education commissioner Betty Castor, who lost to Mel Martinez in last year's U.S. Senate race.

Republicans considering a run include Attorney General Charlie Crist, state Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher and Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings.

Me and my family are Floridians

You should be disqualified just for bad grammar. Proper English would be:

My family and I..

Rotten grammar, and he doesn't know squat about the state statutes even though his daddy ran the machine for half of his son't life. Go figure.

The Senate's different.

Legally, there can be no residency requirements for either US Senate or US House candidates, because the only requirements are listed in the Constitution.

Hence why, not only Hillary, but also why Alan Keyes was able to run for the Senate from Illnois.

Amen to THAT! I can't stand it when KIDS butcher the language. But would-be celebrities and "role models"? Outrageous.

Thank God for this development. Florida barely survived the first Lawton Chiles governorship, another one might just finish the state off.

Say what they will, Bob Martinez was a good governor, and so was Claude Kirk.

Well, I think his attitude is pretty good, even if his grammer is less than perfect. Much better than if he wanted to sue to overturn that requirement. For a dem, esp. that's pretty good.

Daddy Chiles was a damned crook. Right before the 1994 election in which he defeated Jeb Bush, his campaign called old people and told them Jeb would cut off their social security payments if elected. I don't care how many freakin' miles he supposedly walked. A scumbag is still a scumbag. Good riddens to a another demorat. But I think the real reason he is dropping out is that he knows he will lose. Even Janet Reno could beat his ass. But then Janet could beat up most men!

So many newcomers have moved to FL in the past 15 years that most Sunshine residents probably don't know the accomplishments of the late Lawton Chiles. The late Gov. Chiles was able to forge a coalition of North FL and South FL. FL has changed so dramtically that such a coalition is unlikely. It is like French sKerry winning both New York and Alabama in a Presidential run.

I remember alot of the older Jewish folks in South Florida (where my parents live) LOVED Chiles. How the hell did he fool the crackers in North Florida into supporting his liberal agenda?

With all due respect this sounds like the kind of nit-picking Bush-haters have used for years to paint GW as an illiterate idiot.

[How the hell did he fool the crackers in North Florida into supporting his liberal agenda?]

The "crackers" must have assumed that anyone who has a Southern draw and "he-coon" roots can't be a liberal. After all, a Southern RAT is more conservative than a Yankee Republican. One good thing about Bill Clinton is that he destroyed that urban legend.
