He's unable to travel because he refuses to present a government-approved ID

SAN FRANCISCO -- John Gilmore's splendid isolation began July 4, 2002, when, with defiance aforethought, he strolled to the Southwest Airlines counter at Oakland Airport and presented his ticket.

During war or even during Peace, ID's are a necessary fact of life in sensitive areas prone to enemy sabotage or attack.

There are many sensitive areas at the moment. Random searches of little old ladies and asking everyone including terrorist sleepers for an ID are just two of the many distractions from that security effort. In your case your background check got you on the ship, not your ID.

"In post 9/11 America, asking "Why?" when someone from an airline asks for identification can start some interesting arguments...."

That tends to say it all for me!! There are some idiots in this world that there SOLE existence is to create arguements and test the limits. So good for him, now he doesn't go anywhere. CONGTRATULATIONS JOHN!!!! What a great point you've made, you've CHANGED THE WORLD!!WHHOOHOO!!!

And frankly, if you look at the picture of him in the article the caption could very convincingly read "Hi, I'm your friendly neighborhood dumbfu*k!!

What a tool!!!

"The government doesn't have to require the latter: my company won't let me in its building without an ID that I must pass through a badge reader.

No badge, no entry."

But, according to the article, this isn't some voluntary arrangement on the part of the company. It's the same 'law', merely a different agency enforcing it.
Employee and employer relations as you mention above is not the same animal as the substance of the article.
Let's try another example.
What if there was suddenly a regulation that required one to show ID before being able to purchase food at a supermarket ( on the pretext that terrorists might be trying to poison the food supply ).

Obviously, those who refuse to present said ID don't HAVE to shop at the supermarket. Then these individuals would have to grow their own food ( and can it, dehydrate it, etc. ).
After all, there is NO RIGHT for people to buy food at the supermarket without showing their ID. And, the supermarket can make any terms it wants ( even though it is coerced by a law, perhaps even secret ).

You follow this? Yes, it is using an extreme example, but it captures the issue.

Ah, a standard run-of-the-mill Me-ocrat, full of all the rights and none of the responsibilities, while everyone else has all the responsibilities and none of his rights. "Do you know who I am?!" just doesn't cut it in today's world.

The law in question isn't even secret, despite what the article and some posters here seem to think or imply. I posted the relevant sections of the US Code above.

Not my problem if you can't be bothered to use FindLaw.

His philosophy seems to be, "if I can build something that breaks your code I am entitled to do whatever I want to do." He has no moral problem with what he does but don't expect him to follow somebody else's rules.

He is NOT unable to travel. He can drive, be driven, take a train, take a bus, buy or lease and learn to fly (or have flown) his own aircraft or hire an aircraft and pilot as needed.

How do so many of these whiny libs get so rich, anyway?

Most state motor vehicle departments will issue a photo ID to NON drivers. That would seem to be a solution for this irate "traveler".

The problem this traveler has is not showing id, It is just he simply wanted to see the law requiring him to do so. Apparently mere citizens are unable to see this specific law, If after an open debate in Congress it is the law that we must have Passports to travel in this country, say border stations at State, County or City lines, then so be it. Think of all the bad people we could catch, and if you did not break any laws (hopefully you wouldn't break any secrete ones) you would have nothing to worry about.

That's it exactly...
I've had to deal with several, "I'm smarter than the rest of humanity" types in my life...
I'm starting to think several of them are posting here today!
:0)
These folks are unquestionably intelligent, and you would expect them to be able to grasp the big picture...

But sadly their egos lets them believe they're "special", and as such They don't have to conform to ANY request they don't agree with...no matter what good it will accomplish.

That's the opposite of what Gilmore said or wants.

...Another sterling example of a seemingly intelligent person so caught up in himself, and his own rights, he has no room in his mind or heart to consider the safety of anyone else...

You appear to be so afraid for your own safety that you don't give a damn about anyone else's rights.

With my DD214, Passport, Texas DL and SS card (even though it says not to be used for id), There are a lot of people born in or before 1940 who do not have birth certificates.
