He's unable to travel because he refuses to present a government-approved ID

SAN FRANCISCO -- John Gilmore's splendid isolation began July 4, 2002, when, with defiance aforethought, he strolled to the Southwest Airlines counter at Oakland Airport and presented his ticket.

And that way you can comply with a secret law that the government won't tell you whether or not it exists and in many criminal cases has dropped the prosecution rather than admit in court that it exists.
What country are we talking about here?

If you can equate showing an I.D. to board an airplane, to giving up your freedom, you belong over on DU

Double negatives tend to be confusing, especially when I haven't had my coffee.

My linguistics professor was lecturing our class. “In English,” he exclaimed. “a double negative forms a positive. In some languages, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative.

“However,” the professor continued, “there is no language in which a double positive can form a negative.”

Where as I piped up from the back of the room, “Yeah, Right.”

No, the public does not have the right to know who is under investigation because that could compromise the investigation. That hasn't changed since 9-11. That was the situation long before.
The public does have the right to know that a crime occurred and who the victim was.
Police are allowed discretion under law in revealing information that they may deem helpful in solving the case, for example, a witness description of a suspect or evidence that a reader might recognize and assist police, for instance, an article of clothing left at the scene or forensic evidence that the attacker was left handed.

Forgive me. I was referring to the 'special scrutiny' that only kids, grandmothers, and buxom ladies are subjected to. It is still frowned upon to single out Middle Eastern men.

Just because the fools that are doing 'security' and running the TSA are running in circles and targeting the wrong people does not mean that they are busy or effective.

Did you read my ealier post where I breached a heavily guarded federal 'intallation' just by saying that I didn't have ID? They just let me in and I could have taken any weapon in with me that I wanted to if my purpose was to cause mayhem. And I'm not a bad guy looking to cause trouble. I'm just a common sense guy that saw huge holes in so called security after observing them for about 5 minutes. BTW, even when I showed them ID, they didn't even bother to see if the picture matched the person handing them the card. They just looked at the card.

Like a said before, this is a terribly expensive and useless exercise in making sheep feel safe.

...knowing someone's ID does not prevent the person from committing a terrorist act. The 9/11 hijackers had driver's licenses. Knowing someone's identity, as Gilmore argues it, adds less to security than it takes away from a traveler's protection from authority that might oppress simply because it can.

He's fighting against a secret law that neither the airlines nor the government want to reveal. What kind of law is that?!!! If you don't think we're under oppression...

I don't have to check anything in post #204.

Laws cannot trump the Constitution and you've already conceded that there is no off switch. What part don't you understand?

Gee, you really are new.

Look at the 'reply to' number and follow it back up thread.

Apparently you just spout off without reading anything at all.

whether we needs to show our papers for travel within the US.

The answer is yes. Anyone is subject to interpellation on public property even now. The public agent still needs a court warrant to enter private property. For now.

No unfortunately I didn't see the post you mentioned.
But I think that there is a vast gulf between, let's say, having a regulation in place, and being able to monitor each and every person given the authority to implement that regulation.
I think sometimes we forget that we live an imperfect existence, in an imperfect world, ruled by flawed laws...
We're never going to be able to address every perceived wrong...we don't have the time or inclination.
We can only do our best. That's what people like this man who the article is about don't seem to grasp. As I've said before...It's all about him...

Another sterling example of a seemingly intelligent person so caught up in himself, and his own rights, he has no room in his mind or heart to consider the safety of anyone else.

< To people like this life is all about their PERSONAL rights....forget everyone else's rights.

Isn't that what this nation is about? Freedom and Liberty for the individual, and an enumerated list of responsibilities and powers for the government. This guy is rebelling about laws we are required to obey, but not allowed to see what those laws are. How can anyone defend that?

Government respecting right. . .

Direct personal knowledge. . .

ACLU . . .

You should work that up into a full comedy routine. It'd bring down the house.

I guess what you don't understand is that other people's rights are THEIR PERSONAL rights...ok?
What makes his rights more valid than anyone elses?

No unfortunately I didn't see the post you mentioned."

You replied to my post and I commented on your reply. If you can't follow a thread I have no hope that you will be able to understand the animating challenge of liberty.

I never threatened to take the bat and ball and go home. I merely pointed out that you are so new that you haven't taken the time or have the ability to figure out how FR works. Stay or go. It makes no difference to me.
