He's unable to travel because he refuses to present a government-approved ID
SAN FRANCISCO -- John Gilmore's splendid isolation began July 4, 2002, when, with defiance aforethought, he strolled to the Southwest Airlines counter at Oakland Airport and presented his ticket.

The right to safety...? It's good to know that the interpretation of "freedom" in the Constitution is now "safety".
Have a nice day.
I'm not the least worried about myself, puppy.
Why are you so anxious to see the privacy rights of everyone else eroded in favor of feel good measures that provide no security whatsoever?
Would you ask to see the tax laws before sending in a check to the IRS? Would you require that a property owner show you his deed before allowing him onto it?
Here in California, anyone who qualifies as a lawful resident and who can't drive can still get a State ID.
Gee, I seem to recall that 230 years ago some men risked hanging for their Me-ocratic beliefs. King George would have loved you....
Much of the article appears to be inaccurate. I'm thinking we're seeing CBS-class "integrity" at work. I had to hop a Greyhound a couple of months ago after a rental car died on me in a small town. No ID required.
I also had recent opportunity to take the train from Dallas to Houston - no ID required or requested.
Actually, my take on it is that he doesn't like BEING controlled by others who are unable to justify their reason for demanding that control.
Sorry, this Free Billy is drug free. However I see you want us all to partake of the "security" pill. 1 dose of government regulation gives you a 24 hour feeling of safety....
I'm glad for this stooge that he is rich. It's a lot easier to be a rich A-hole than a poor one.
No, sorry but I would turn this around and hand it back to you as potentially someone who is willingly so caught up in your own personal safety and the "security" the government can offer, that you have no room in your mind or heart to consider the constitutional birthrights of your fellow citizens and the future generations of Americans.
This paragraph from the article is absolutely unacceptable;
"...the government asked a judge to hold a hearing in secret and preclude Gilmore's lawyers from seeing the regulation they sought to challenge..."
and I applaud Mr. Gilmore for spending his remaining days and his wealth to do what he can to protect the privacy and at least some of the constitutional rights we were born with in this country.
Like it or not, THIS is what America is about. If we lose our rights in the name of fighting terrorism, what exactly was the point?
If I recall correctly, the single most burning issue that ignited the revolution was the argument that a man could not be siezed at random by government thugs and be forced to show papers and explain his reasons for traveling and be forced to declare his itinerary for their approval.
It sickens me to hear these so-called conservatives whiningly advocate just that. Apparently, everyone should be stopped, searched, and arrested in order to keep them safe.
The Republic is over.
See ya in the camps.
That's not what he said.
"Gilmore will show ID for an international flight because he doesn't expect to set the rules for other nations."
"I will show a passport to travel internationally. I'm not willing to show a passport to travel in my own country,"

Would you demand to see the law which requires a driver's license in order to drive a motor vehicle before handing over yours to the deputy who just pulled you over?
Sir, if you have proved anything today, its that you are a fool.
Therefore, our argument is over, newby.
So your answer to weather you would like to see the ordinance is??? I can not imagine why you would not answer with a simple yes, that you would like to see the ordinance or no you would just take the inspectors word for it. If it were me I would like to see the ordinance involved before I moved anything.
Yes I would like to see the tax law requiring me to send any check to the IRS.
As far as requiring a property owner to show me his deed before allowing him "on to it" I suppose it means what you mean by "on to it" and frankly I am scared to ask :)
I am surprised by the proliferation of of posts by the sheeple on this thread.
What happened to Free Republic? It used to be more about freedom.
People like this would have been laughed off the baord just a few years ago.
