Warning Of A Perfect Storm
Insight Magazine ^ | 2-25-2005 | Arnaud de Borchgrave

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Imagine a world where Russia and the European Union of 25 nations, and Russia and China, and the EU and China, all find more in common with each other than with the United States? Unimaginable, you say. And you would be right. But the seeds of such an anti-U.S. entente were planted in Europe this week.

In Brussels, President Bush told the EU3 - France, the UK and Germany - that it was their responsibility to quash Iran's nuclear ambitions, and the U.S. would not negotiate directly with the totalitarian theocracy in Tehran. The U.S. position was judged absurd by the EU3 before Mr. Bush arrived. And it was still deemed absurd after he left.

The Europeans argue, with some validity, they do not have the clout, even with economic sanctions, to change Iran's mind. The United States also made clear it would never legitimize the Iranian clerics by talking to them face to face, let alone offering them a non-aggression pact in return for respecting the non-proliferation treaty they signed and ratified.

Russia, meanwhile, says it is satisfied the mullahs are not playing with nuclear fire, and it will go on helping Iran's peaceful nuclear power program. Score one for a rapprochement between the EU and Russia over Iran.

If France is part of it, no need to worry - it is guaranteed to be impotent and dysfunctional.

Europe was too stupid to loft goverments that would keep our forefathers there. It has shown itself too stupid to listen to us, even when it came to it's own survival. I say let it fu-- up for the last time, and sink into oblivion. I'd like to think there was something we could do about Europe, but you can't save someone's ass if they don't want you to.

We are the police in a domestic dispute. I'm tired of being shot at by the spouse we were sent to protect.

Russia, China, Iran, bitch slap Europe all you like.

Arnaud de Borchgrave used to be a very interesting commentator. I don't know what's wrong with him.

There is indeed some danger that much of the world will unite against the United States. It's called balance of power politics, and it's a natural instinct. If one nation is strong, the others tend to huddle together for mutual protection. Blocs and alliances form up.

But this has nothing to do with anything Bush has done. It was happening anyway, and would probably only accelerate if we showed weakness. Not much we can do about it but watch out for our own interest and find new allies when old ones betray us.

France has been our enemy for at least 50 years. We just didn't admit it to ourselves.

Imagine 3/4 of the world a Socialistic Sh!thole begging for US money to bail them out? Now imagine the US laughing at them!

They will flirt with this. They may even start down this road, but they will never actually go through with it, if they hope to survive. They know, beyond any doubt, that they exist because of the US. If they screw us they die.

Now, I'm not talking about the EU alone. I'm not just talking about the EU and Russia. I'm talking about all three, as well as the rest of the world.

Now we only have to hope that they are sane. Unfortunately that is a forlorn hope.

And for a Pendragon, a query:

Are you taking proper care of Caliburn?

Absurd? Who said it is absurd? The bureaucrats, who aspire to be elected but cower at the prospect of actually being called upon to lead, are the ones calling the suggestion absurd ... and that was President Bush's message. He wasn't talking to the bureaucrats. He was telling the European people that their elected leaders are weak and ineffective. They will listen and leadership will change.
