Republican Disowns Lesbian Daughter (Keyes)

Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.

So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."

Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.

Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."

Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.

"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.

Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

I think you need to learn how to follow a conversation, "newbie".

Joe, there is a trend at FR, if you run with a big enough gang and lose an arguement bad enough, you call in for reinforcements. Remember, not exactly to help them debate the subject, but to try to bait you to lose your temper so they can call the mods on you. Keep your cool (as you have) and they will disappear after doing their best to pull you down.

I saw that we were on the same page about that a few posts back. This definitely isn't what a legitimate newbie does in their first few days.

Nope, I can't think of an instance where Jesus had to confront any homos. For that matter I can't remember him confronting rapists, pedophiles, bestiality, incest, etc. directly.

However since these sins are for the most part addressed throughout the Bible, I surmise that Jesus came to show us that ALL sin including the abominable type like lesbianism is forgivable IF one is repentant of it. Do you personally believe homosexuality is wrong and can be overcome?

I pinged Amelia because she is a part of this segment of the discussion that "Joe" jumped in on, if that's all right with you.

I've never needed "reinforcements". I'm perfectly capable of expressing myself without them, as my posting history will show. Besides - you guys have a posse of your own, but for some reason, that's "different".

And I don't think you need to explain to "Joe" how FreeRepublic works. He doesn't seem the slightest bit uncomfortable, and seems to know the ropes - after just signing up, too. Huh. Go figure.

Some people need to keep their perversions quiet and in the darkness that spawns them.

Wow, that's awfully American of you. Too bad you can't get your REAL wish and just pack 'em up into cattle cars and send 'em to re-education camps, right?

No Mr. STONECOLD Gop, I am not as cold as you, however as an American I would prefer that homosexuality is not taught as normal in the re-education camps called public schools.

As long as men like Keyes can continue to stand up in America and show the world that there is indeed something still wrong with homosexuality then as a patriot of this country I can do no less than support him. Would you like him silenced?

Do you personally believe homosexuality is wrong and can be overcome?

Yes and yes.

However since these sins are for the most part addressed throughout the Bible,

Right, all sins are wrong, why some people obsessed with one certain kind is a mystery to me.

"Keyes is a bright guy but his attitude and methods leave alot to be desired....He seems to alienate many conservatives with his sometimes caustic rhetoric"

I submit that any "conservatives" who "feel" alienated by anything Dr. Keyes has to say were never Conservatives to begin with.

What kills me is how certain people think they are victims on these threads - usually the ones doing the "baiting" themselves, I've noticed.

Actually, this whole thing is not about obsession over homosexuality, believe it or not. It's about what is the truth versus what isn't, what is right versus what is wrong.

I tried to engage you in a sincere conversation by asking you a question, and all you've done is "bait". You guys are unreal.
