Republican Disowns Lesbian Daughter (Keyes)

Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.

So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."

Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.

Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."

Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.

"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.

Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

So I've noticed. I usually don't let myself get so frustrated about these threads but they can't read, or they don't just don't want to acknowledge the truth. Arrgghhh.

Reading comprehension is a good thing. And I'd post more to you but you won't "get it." Sad.

If you do post to me, try using some scripture at least once on this thread. I'd appreciate it. Otherwise don't waste my time.

-------------

The Bible does not say, "Hate the sin, love the sinner." It says, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7). And that God hates "all workers of iniquity" (Ps 5:5). "The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man" (Ps 5:6). Also "the wicked and the one who loves violence [God] hates." (Ps 11:5). Further, "The face of the Lord is against those who do evil" (Ps 34:16). God "loves righteousness and hate[s] wickedness (Ps. 45:7).

Might you have a link to where I can find this info that they are actually still in communication?

Right, and I didn't vote for him as President of The United States when he ran, not because he was black, or a good Christian, but because he's just an expert at losing elections.

The info came out before my first post on the thread... Sorry I don't have the link to the post number. I think I got started about 300 posts into this thread.

"First of all, I wouldn't break off communication with her."

Communication is a GOOD thing. I can't think of when having an open line ISN'T a good thing, especially from/between parents to/and their children.

Might you have any other info on their supposed "total lack of communication"?

No. Most reports I've seen just mimic each other, saying that the two aren't speaking. Never mind they produce no quote to back that up.

Are they speaking? Who knows? Maybe for one day or week they weren't. Maybe they haven't spoken since they last saw each other. Maybe it's none of our business.

All I know is, I can find nothing that proves Alan Keyes has disowned his daughter.

Now that he knows what she has been studying, he has opted out of paying for or enabling her Lesbian Studies program in College ...

That upsets liberals, whether they are in the MSM, on DU or here.

Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

So what do you call turning someone out of the family home and breaking off all communications? A sabbatical from the family? 'Tough love'?

A parent can still tell their children the differences between right and wrong while still allowing their children to make up their own minds.

What do you mean when you say "still allowing them to make up their own minds"? Unless you have a machine that can interface with their mind and change it for them, they will be able to make up their own mind no matter what you do.

The only thing you can do is teach them right from wrong. If they refuse to respect your guidance and they choose instead to have others teach them how to engage in grevious sin (and tell them that sin is good), you have to chastise them.

If they are grown up enough to reject your rules and your correction and shove their sin in your face in open rebellion, then you must stop subsidising them.

The daughter is the one at fault. She is the one who rejected her parents and their core values. She is the one who reinvented right and wrong and is completely unrepentant about it. In fact she is proclaiming her new Bible-rejecting immorality.

Her life is now an open sermon proclaiming that blatant immorality in rejection of the Word of God is a proud choice to make. It was her choice to proclaim her sin publicly and I guess proudly.

I think we understand you don't like Keyes, but your conclusion is not the best one.

The daughter herself says that her parents were patient with her until SHE chose to come out publicly that she was a lesbian and that it was a good choice.

I quote her from a newspaper article:

Maya was interviewed by “The Advocate” last week via e-mail from a Chicago public library because she had nowhere else to go. She said her parents' initial reaction to news that she was a lesbian was denial. "They said I wasn't really queer--I was either lying about it or just confused or going through a phase or brainwashed, etc. Then they just got angry, upset--my mom in particular," she said. "It was best if we just stayed quiet and pretended the whole queer issue never happened. Occasionally we'd have arguments or long talks where they reminded me how horrible and sinful homosexuality is, but mostly if it didn't come up, our relationship stayed pretty ok. Recently things have gotten a lot worse, though, because I'm not staying quiet about it anymore."

So, a person should not say that Keyes thought it was okay, (he never did), and that it was just blah, blah, blah...I don't like him...blah, blah, blah...

Clearly, they were longsuffering with her until she chose to proclaim what she already knew her parents knew to be sinful behavior.

I think any honest person would have to admit that Alan and his wife never accepted her sinful lifestyle and only kicked her out when she went public. She left them no choice at that point. It was no longer a private family issue that they hoped would heal itself. Instead the daughter made it clear that she was in complete in-your-face rebellion and forced them to act.

It has already been well documented here on FR that Keyes disowned his daughter in response to her political activities, not her sexual proclivities. Her own blog documents how Keyes cut her off in response to her attendance to a counter-inaugural against a sitting president during wartime.

Hello JS, welcome to FR.

You've explained it to them in the clearest and simplest terms possible, however they refuse to accept the truth There are none more blind than those that will not see. The truth is not in them and you are engaged in an exercise of futility. They hate Keyes, they hate the truth, they hate "repentant" "go and sin no more" true Christianity.

He's not opposing her being a lesbian, he's opposing her being a publicly acknowledged lesbian. Big difference.

Amazing! -when I attempted to read his mind I could not -as such, I assumed his intentions were not known...
