Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
As Christians, we cannot embrace sin, not even in our own children. We love them, pray for them, hope they will see the error of their ways and show them tough love. You don't stop communicating but you can't love their sin. It truly is love the sinner and hate the sin. If one doesn't understand that, I'm not sure how much they read the Word of God. Jesus loves sinners; he hates sin.
I can't imagine disowning my own children.
God doesn't banish people because of their sin. He banishes them because they reject the Holy Spirit. That's the only sin that keeps them out of heaven. What does happen with sinners is that they lose out on his blessings here on earth because they walk their own way. They don't see the Kingdom of God on this earth because they won't obey and walk the way God wants them to. If they repent and turn away from their sin, they can once again be blessed by the God who does love them. He doesn't want anyone to perish but because he is a just God, he allows them to when they refuse his Holy Spirit.
Well I think it is refreshing that a man of faith espouses his conviction in the political arena proudly and unabashedly like Keyes does. If more men did that then people wouldn't cringe when someone actually does.
It's a sad testament that people want to quiet down the Lord in order to win favor in people's hearts. I remember when conservative flame-throwers such as Gingrich,Buchanan, Coulter,Keyes, Savage etc. were acknowledged and welcome in the Republican Party.
But now as the party apparatus moves left and tries to tiptoe thru the tulips of the media, democrats and the overall political correctness that currently engulfs the country, they've become more or less a reactionary big tent all-inclusive party rather than a party that follows its platform and core principles regardless of its critics. More often than not just as with the convention I get the impression that conservatives need not apply.
As Christians, we need to look inward before we start casting stones. Breaking off communication even with your own flesh and blood does not a good Christian make.
For starters, scroll the thread and/or search FR and read Maya's actual quotes. JMO, but except for her radical lesbianism, she sounds like a decent daughter. That's one side of the story.
The other side of the story (her parents' side) we don't know very many details about, likely because the Keyes value their daughter's privacy as well as their own. I think the only thing they ever really said to the press was (paraphrased) "Our daughter is an adult and is thus accountable for herself." Sounds reasonable to me.
It's curious to me why so many people are so interested in all the "gory" aspects of their private lives anyway. I mean, I doubt many folks would jump eagerly onto a thread entitled "Keyes goes to church on Sunday".
This story sells because many are interested in slandering and seeing harm come to a good man.
Peach, Peach, read my lips: THEY DID NOT DISOWN THEIR DAUGHTER. They just stopped funding her lifestyle and are trying to show her tough love. It's very difficult for them, too. They love her and she KNOWS they love her. If you read the columns where she is speaking of what has happened, you will see that.
"Class," maybe. Love? No.
Love isn't sentimental or soft-headed. Maya's eternal soul is at risk, and the Keyes have acted accordingly.
I'm more concerned with the fact the parents broke off communication with their daughter. It's unheard of.
Helloooo, Lisa. THEY DID NOT DISOWN THEIR DAUGHTER! She knows they love her; she understands why they've cut off her funding but they are still in communication. Quit reading what you WANT to read and go back and read what she has to say about this situation.
I don't understand why people see this as wrong. His house, his rules. She didn't like them, she chose her path in life, and is doing so without parental support. She's over 18 - they owe her nothing.
Yes, I know you weren't and aren't really interested in the truth of the matter.
The last paragraph in my last post applies to you and many others on this thread.
Exactly. But liberals think that's so meeeeeeeaaannnn.
While we're talking about being "Good Christians" and all that. Truth be told, Alan Keyes committed murder of his own flesh and blood.
dwilli, WHAT is your problem with fundies? You paint with such a big biased brush. Not all Christians are fundies, okay? You act like you hate Christians. I'm sorry to hear that. Most of us are good eggs, sometimes a little cracked, but good folks who love Jesus and want to live by Biblical standards. Most fundies don't believe in faith healing or snake handling, my dear. You have them mixed up with someone else.
You are sick. Don't post to me again.
I'm not sick. You just can't handle a religious perspective.
You're sick?
With what?
A little cold?
