Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
Or pieces of human excrement like you.
Would you change your mind about a sin if you found your daughter partaking? Does that suddenly make it all right?
".....feet planted firmly in mid-air." Sure made me LOL.
Thats what the Pharisees said of Jesus and His disciples too.
What religion do you hold to, if any?
It wouldn't make her not my daughter.
Glad you called "dwilli" on his/her double standard. Saved me some typing. :-)
Good for him.
I believe I would go and adopt me another daugther after all he raised one but did't get one, that would honer their father and their mother.
She is playing the thing masterfully, smearing her father while basking in the adulation and support of people who hate every firm moral stance he has ever taken.
She's an adult. He's treating her as an adult.
In time, she may realize she has been duped by a lying adversary who has no love or regard for her.
You are so right. I've never had to deal with this situation (do have a couple of cases in my extended family where the parents had to deal with it). It was very painful for them, but they still love their children.
There is virtually nothing my children could do to make me disown them. That does not mean I would agree with the lifesyle, just means that I would still love my kids nomatter what. Both of them are very much hetrosexual, so that is a cross I didn't have to bear.
This does show the glaring difference between the Keyes and Cheney families, I guess.
I find it ironic that the same people who complain about how Keyes' daughter came out with her sexuality to hurt her father politically are the same ones who often say they won't vote because the Republican Party has "Abandoned" them.
Talk about needing to read the Bible
Matthew 5
21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
If Keyes did this, he was wrong in disowning his own flesh and blood. This isn't the same as the commandment that we should not associate with sinners. The family relationship is not the same as a voluntary relationship between friends or associates. Keyes needs to explain to his daughter that he does not agree with her lifestyle, that he is praying for her, and that he loves her unconditionally as Christ first loved us. But of course that would be the Christian thing to do and we can't let a relationship with Jesus Christ and having to answer to Him one day on how we loved the unlovable get in the way of party politics. The Republican party is making that clearer almost every day
Ahhhhhhhhhh, nothig like some good old hyperbolic, hyperemotional rhetoric in leiu of a rational, cogent response, eh? :-)
I agree. And like your comment about church excommunication, strikingly unrelated to Ms. Keyes' present situation.
Poppycock.
Apparently he parents found out because they found some magazine she was reading while she was still in high school.
Occam's Razor here. Apparently while she wasn't "public" she could live with her father, in his apartment, and work for him.
The minute she was public...out with her.
I would't be at all disturbed if he had told her ahead of time that she was out of his house at 18 if she didn't change, although I would disagree as to the effectiveness.
That's fine, this thread will be here when you get back. As for your homophobia charge, that's usually a term most often used by the leftists liberal democratic shills to justify their pro-homo position without addressing the issue, and not something usually utilized by conservatives in a conservative forum purporting conservative ideals.
Homophobia means an irrational fear of homosexuality. People who support Keyes sound like those who abhor this perversion more than fear it and are following the biblical dictate to "flee from all sin". Why is that un-Christian to you? Have you ever heard of Christophobia? Some of the posters on here sound like they suffer from that.
Are you a member of the faith-healing or snake-handling
wing of the fundies?
Christophobia? Yeah, I do hate that guy. Always putting that damn pink wrapping everywhere...
Jesus said, "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me." (Matt. 10:370 Christians do not bend God's Word to fit their family members' sinful lifestyles. They must witness to the truth in order to warn those they love that God is not mocked.
