Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
You intentionally miss the point: the sins others commit doesn't reduce the seriousness of the sins you commit. As I said, they're irrelevent.
RE: "LOL...when you come on a conservative website like FR and call people 'homophobes', you hardly make yourself look like a conservative."
If you equate conservativism with bigotry then that's your problem, buddy. If you can tell me what my support for the Second Amendment, lower tax rates, and strong national defense to combat the ever-growing Muslim terrorist threat have to do with your rampant hatred of homosexuality, I'll eat my hat. I also oppose abortion.
Call me a RINO or whatever if it makes you feel better about your anti-individualist extremism, but I probably run an 80 on the ACU scale-- conservative enough if you ask me.
RE: "fornication, uncleanness, lewdness....What part of homosexuality does not apply to these things."
Fornication would not be that great a problem if my fellow Republicans weren't so struck up on rejecting gay marriage.
Uncleanliness and rudeness are terms so maddeningly vague that no two people I've ever met share the exact same definition of what they are. You know it when you see it, and I guess the same goes for God.
Man, you hit that nial right on the head!
Calling those who oppose the homosexual agenda 'homophobes' is a tactic of the left. FReepers can draw whatever conclusions from you doing that they would like.
Since when did lewdness=rudeness
I always find it ironic that the ones who call Christians who oppose the homosexual agenda 'bigots' are invariably some of the worst bigots you'll ever encounter.
nial = nail...oops
Going offline now to eat dinner, watch TV, do a little reading, sleep...the basics of life.
By all means keep sending your nasty hate messages to me if you wish. I'll get to them all (or many of them anyway) tomorrow.
"nor have I seen a public school that had seminars teaching students to accept and promote drunkeness."
I don't know where you went to school, but here drunkeness doesn't need to be promoted. It seems to be pretty well accepted as well.
I wonder how the headline "Republican Disowns Drunken Daughter" would have played out on this thread.
Maya Keyes interview on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, Monday, February 14, 2005And:"WOLF BLITZER: Has there been a complete falling-out now between you and your father?
"MAYA KEYES: No. I love my parents very much. And they love me. And they disagree with what I'm doing at the moment. And, as such, they can't support me in this activity, but they are still always going to love me. I know that."
"TODD: A source close to the Keyes family says this whole situation has been devastating for everyone concerned, but the source says, through it all, Maya and her parents are still speaking . . . ."
METRO WEEKLY: Tell us a little about your life growing up in your father's household.Alan Keyes:MAYA MARCEL-KEYES: Well, it was fairly normal. My parents are good parents.
....
MW: Did you at any point think that your being gay could change their minds about homosexuality?
MARCEL-KEYES: No. My parents believe what they believe because of their religion. My mom, if possible, is even more conservative than my dad. I didn't think it would change anything. If you think that something is morally wrong, just because somebody you know is doing it doesn't mean that you start accepting it. So if people like my parents really believe it is a sin, then because I'm sinning isn't suddenly going to make them stop and think, "Oh, well, it's okay now."
MW: You admire their dedication to their principles?
MARCEL-KEYES: Yes. They have a lot of integrity. I think they're wrong on this issue and I wish they would change, but I don't think they're going to.
MW: What are your feelings towards them?
MARCEL-KEYES: I love them. They're my parents.
MW: And what do you think their feelings are towards you?
MARCEL-KEYES: I think they love me. They're probably very upset at the moment, but they love me.
....
MW: Are you upset with how the media have handled your story?
MARCEL-KEYES: There have been a lot of rabid media who don't care about anything I have to say. It's weird because all they want to know is do I hate my father, trying to get me to say bad things about him, trying to get me to say that I'm angry [at him], and none of that is true. He's my father and I respect his decisions.
MW: Do you think your father would be good in government?
MARCEL-KEYES: He has a lot of integrity. He's a very honest person and I think he would be better than a lot of politicians. He actually stands for what he believes in. I don't agree with what he believes in, but a lot of people in this country do. He would make a good representative for those people.

ALAN KEYES: The heterosexual relationship--and this is acknowledged in the homosexual literature and everything else--the heterosexual relationship is haunted by the possibility of the child. And that possibility means, what? That possibility means that you have to commit yourself, somewhere in your head, to the possibility of a lifelong commitment that involves not only selfish pleasure, but sometimes sacrifice and burdensome grief. These are the things that we must discuss if we are to have a rational discussion of how we preserve the institution of marriage. Trying to turn this issue into an issue of personality is again, as I have often said about the media, an effort to engage in polemics.
I think that the great error here would be to try to turn this into a question of personalities. But as I said to someone the other day, if my own daughter were a homosexual or a lesbian, I would love my daughter, but I would tell my daughter that she was in sin. And I would love her and pray for her and try to open her heart to the truth of God's intention for her life. That's what I would do.

Thanks for the reply.
"Going offline now to eat dinner, watch TV, do a little reading, sleep...the basics of life."
Me too, don't forget the prayers too, man.
"your nasty hate messages"
No hate from me, man, just speaking the truth in love.

I agree. Homosexuality is a nihilistic lifestyle.....exactly as described by Keyes as a selfish hedonism........to act like it is a viable choice is to ignor all Christian teaching and the Pope.
He is disgraceful and cold. But she sounds like a real pip. I mean did she have to come out this way. It is more hostile than anything. What a number to do to a parent in public. Maybe they deserve each other.
Love the sinner, hate the sin.
Exactly. But what are you *really* saying?
You think Keyes doesn't love his daughter?
So does this mean the door is completely closed to anyone who doesn't agree with one or two of those sentiments? It would seem to defeat the purpose of a message board to just have a lot of cheerleading and no discussion. Although a great many republicans do fall into all of those categories not all do, should those who do not really be left out in the cold? Can they not congregate and discuss issues with people who are generally like minded?
