Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
I disagree. The parents removed their financial support.
You must consider the source. I would withhold judgement until there was more details from trustworthy sources. In fact, I'd want to hear it from Mr. Keyes himself.
Incidently, have you ever asked yourselves why Mr. Keyes wasn't given a lot of airtime on bias media outlets? You should. Mr. Keyes is never PC with issues. Never sugarcoats or "makes nice." There is no misunderstanding, or questioning as to where he stands. I, for one, admire him for pulling no punches, and for his integrity.
In all fairness, we don't know what was said between M/M Keyes and their daughter.
well said.....Keyes is a bright guy but his attitude and methods leave alot to be desired....He seems to alienate many conservatives with his sometimes caustic rhetoric
Keys did nothing shocking. He stopped paying for her tuition. There is nothing that says he has to enable her ability to have meaningless recreational sex.
I have seen this situations, when and if she reforms a place will be set for her at the dinner table.
Well he's probably the leading Republican vocalist. Sings darn good. Never could figure out why he was singing so much during his IL senate run. Made no sense like a lot of his campaign up here.
She did choose to be a Lesbian. Now she'll have to live with her decision. I think her future would be easier if she had a man.
What has total acceptance of Mary's behavior done for Mary? What has it done to everyone else? Mary is further than ever from deciding to leave her immoral lifestyle, and through her everyone else is feeling the pressure to ignore the truth about this harmful and immoral behavior. Personally I think it sounds like Keyes has a truer LOVE for his daughter than the Cheney's do. Love doesn't overlook harm, not to the person you love nor to the society you both influences. Love is helping your child do the right thing.
This is another travesty that being gay causes, it leaves parents wondering where they went wrong and puts family members against one another.
Exactly. In my opinion, that is true love.
I'll second that! It is disgraceful in my book, but not surprised out of Keyes after the way he treated VP Cheney on his daughter.
And yet this man is held up by some on here as a role model and anything he says is 100% correct! Have the same opinion of him I had in 2000 and it hasn't changed even though I gave him a chance in Illinois, he blew that too with his attacks on humanity it seems. No one can live up to the "great" Dr. Keyes' standards. (sarcasm)
Love the sinner. Hate the sin.
If this is your brand of Christianity, I don't want any part of it.
I have read nothing from Maya or her father claiming anyone was DISOWNED. The media is creating a caricature right-wing bogyman to gain sympathy for their agenda.
MW: Did you at any point think that your being gay could change their minds about homosexuality?MAYA MARCEL-KEYES: No. My parents believe what they believe because of their religion. My mom, if possible, is even more conservative than my dad. I didn't think it would change anything. If you think that something is morally wrong, just because somebody you know is doing it doesn't mean that you start accepting it. So if people like my parents really believe it is a sin, then because I'm sinning isn't suddenly going to make them stop and think, "Oh, well, it's okay now."
MW: You admire their dedication to their principles?
MARCEL-KEYES: Yes. They have a lot of integrity. I think they're wrong on this issue and I wish they would change, but I don't think they're going to.
MW: What are your feelings towards them?
MARCEL-KEYES: I love them. They're my parents.
MW: And what do you think their feelings are towards you?
MARCEL-KEYES: I think they love me. They're probably very upset at the moment, but they love me.
....
MW: The story we're hearing is that he disowned you, kicked you out.
MAYA MARCEL-KEYES: He cut off all financial support, but that's something that I can totally understand. I am working for things that he's directly opposed to. It doesn't make much sense for him to be [financially] supporting someone who is working against what he believes in.
....
MW: Are you upset with how the media have handled your story?
MAYA MARCEL-KEYES: There have been a lot of rabid media who don't care about anything I have to say. It's weird because all they want to know is do I hate my father, trying to get me to say bad things about him, trying to get me to say that I'm angry [at him], and none of that is true. He's my father and I respect his decisions.
MW: Do you think your father would be good in government?
MARCEL-KEYES: He has a lot of integrity. He's a very honest person and I think he would be better than a lot of politicians. He actually stands for what he believes in. I don't agree with what he believes in, but a lot of people in this country do. He would make a good representative for those people.
Her parents ... broke off all communication ...
Contradicted by this:
Maya Keyes interview on CNN with Wolf Blitzer Monday, February 14, 2005The media want a falling out. They want Maya to be disowned. They want Maya to say nasty things about her father."WOLF BLITZER: Has there been a complete falling-out now between you and your father?
"MAYA KEYES: No. I love my parents very much. And they love me. And they disagree with what I'm doing at the moment. And, as such, they can't support me in this activity, but they are still always going to love me. I know that."
"TODD: A source close to the Keyes family says this whole situation has been devastating for everyone concerned, but the source says, through it all, Maya and her parents are still speaking . . . ."
"TODD: An aide to Alan Keyes tells CNN Maya worked for an Illinois political group run by Keyes and lived in a Chicago apartment paid for by that group. The aide says Maya and her father mutually agreed she should leave that group and therefore she's no longer eligible to live in the apartment. That was after Maya went to an anti-Bush protest during last month's inauguration."
They will ignore anything to the contrary.
Ridiculous cliche! Keyes is doing just that. You don't enable homosexual behavior or any type of sinful behavior. It can't be business as usual once a member of your family becomes defiant in their sin. Methinks you are not ANY brand of Christianity.
I have seen this situations, when and if she reforms a place will be set for her at the dinner table.
Exactly, Keyes sent a strong message to his daughter that he would not support her immorality and indignant disrespect for her parents and family either morally or physcally. Like he said, she is an adult and is responsible for her own actions. Since she wants to live her life by her own standards, then she can foot the bill and not live it in opposition to his standards while taking his money.
When she repents, the welcome home mat will be laid out in red.
I wouldn't foot her bill at university either. But I wouldn't disown my own flesh and blood unless they posed a danger to me or my family.
Disowning isn't a full denial of familial relationship. It is equivalent to excommunication by the Church of the unrepentant sinner, whereby the unrepentant sinner is cast out of the Church and denied it's protection and benefits, all meant to bring that sinner to repentance.
"And yet this man is held up by some on here as a role model and anything he says is 100% correct!"
I've read the posts and I can't find one individual that views him as a "role model", or believes that whatever comes out of his mouth is always "100% correct!" Admiration does not equal "role model."
Ahem. Your bigotry is showing. Just thought you should know.
