Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
If you don't want anything to do with Keyes' "brand of Christianity", I guess you simply don't want to be a Christian.
Can't your read and comprehend English when you are angry?
The Guardian says that she was disowned. She didn't say that and to the contrary, it seems they all still love each other, but Keyes will not pay for her to engage in that lifestyle and I don't blame him.
Sexual preference is BS PC gobbledygook.
Say it like it is -- sexual perversion.
Sin is sin regardless of who it is. The prodical son realized it, came back home after suffering and came back. Its heroic that a father could do what Keyes has done.
So Alan Keyes, the Pope, Billy Graham, and Dobson are all
Equals?
Exactly!
But some FReepers are more than willing to believe everything negative any leftist rag says about Keyes for the purpose of slandering him.
And then they say they are "Christian".
Sin is sin regardless of who it is. The prodical son realized it, came back home after suffering and came back. Its heroic that a father could do what Keyes has done.
Nor did it Keyes, except in the minds of the Guardian. He's not funding her lifestyle. That's all. He has to courage to take a stand where most would back down and be hypocritical.
Yours is a calm voice here.
I agree...there is much we don't know.
The info I'm basing my conclusions on, besides what I've already said, are that a brother has taken her in and that I've read that lesbian behavior is often a reaction to some type of deficient or abusive fathering. I doubt abusive, but I can see deficient as a real possibility. Another factor is the seeming abruptness of her being out of the house and (this may surprise you, but think about it) her continued defense of he parents.
Yes. Assuming all have committed themselves to Jesus Christ.
This is fundamental.
Are you a Christian?
Very well said
That's one of the more ridiculous things I've seen said in FreeRepublic.
I couldn't agree more.
Never Have I mentioned my religeous
beliefs anywhere in this thread or anywhere
publicly. My beliefs are personal ain't
trying to sell them to anyone else.
I have no feelings of guilt or enemies as far as I know.
This is what amuses me about a certain brand of Christianity - it's all about the wrath and the burning and the judging.
Interesting that you listed all the sexual sins and put everything else in the "other sins" department.
Keyes has cut off his relationship with his own daughter because of surface political differences and lifestyle objections-- what a damn shame. All I can say is that he really must not have cared much for her before this particular public incident if he is willing to destroy such a sacred relationship over such a shallow purpose.
I never, NEVER let a visit to a family member pass without telling them I I Love them and that I will always be there for them so long as I draw a breath on this planet; Keyes would be well-served to do the same. No ammount of petty grudges and political differences can mean anything to a man on his death bed. May the Lord allow Keyes a chance to put this right before that which comes for all of us comes for him.
I usually respect Alan Keyes, and I even supported him to a degree in the 2000 Presidential Primaries (thought he'd make a great Veep at the time). Not here though...not this time.
I just read your earlier post, for which you quite rightly got flamed.
And BTW, everyone's beliefs are personal.
Have a good day.
